|
Chapter 2
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
The word that Isaias the son of Amos saw, concerning Juda and Jerusalem.
1
This is a message which was revealed to Isaias, the son of Amos, about Juda and Jerusalem.
2
2
And in the last days the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be prepared on the top of mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it.
2
In later days, the mountain where the Lord dwells will be lifted high above the mountain-tops, looking down over the hills, and all nations will flock there together.
3
3
And many people shall go, and say: Come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall come forth from Sion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
3
A multitude of peoples will make their way to it, crying, Come, let us climb up to the Lord’s mountain-peak, to the house where the God of Jacob dwells; he shall teach us the right way, we will walk in the paths he has chosen. The Lord’s commands shall go out from Sion, his word from Jerusalem,
4
4
And he shall judge the Gentiles, and rebuke many people: and they shall turn their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into sickles: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they be exercised any more to war.
4
and he will sit in judgement on the nations, giving his award to a multitude of peoples. They will melt down their swords into plough-shares, their spears into pruning-hooks, nation levying war against nation and training itself for battle no longer.
5
Domus Jacob, venite, et ambulemus in lumine Domini.
5
O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.
5
Come you too (they will say), children of Jacob, let us walk together in the path where the Lord shews us light.
6
6
For thou hast cast off thy people, the house of Jacob: because they are filled as in times past, and have had soothsayers as the Philistines, and have adhered to strange children.
6
And still they are cast off, these children of Jacob, the Lord’s own people; ever since they grew rich, like the men who went before them, and began to trust in divination, like the Philistines, and to ally themselves with men of alien breed.
7
7
Their land is filled with silver and gold: and there is no end of their treasures.
7
A land full of silver and gold, with no end to its treasures,
8
8
And their land is filled with horses: and their chariots are innumerable. Their land also is full of idols: they have adored the work of their own hands, which their own fingers have made.
8
a land full of horses and chariots innumerable; a land full of idols, where men worship the devices their own hands have made.
9
9
And man hath bowed himself down, and man hath been debased: therefore forgive them not.
9
For this, high and low fall to earth, abate their human pride; and shall they find forgiveness?
10
Ingredere in petram, et abscondere in fossa humo a facie timoris Domini, et a gloria majestatis ejus.
10
Enter thou into the rock, and hide thee in the pit from the face of the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty.
10
See where the Lord comes, in all his terrors, in all the glory of his majesty; take refuge, now, in some rock-cavern, hide thee in some pit!
11
11
The lofty eyes of man are humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be made to stoop: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.
11
Now indeed man’s haughty looks must fall to earth, human pride must be abated; no room for any greatness but the Lord’s, when that day comes.
12
Quia dies Domini exercituum super omnem superbum, et excelsum, et super omnem arrogantem, et humiliabitur;
12
Because the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and highminded, and upon every one that is arrogant, and he shall be humbled.
12
The day of the Lord of hosts! With the dawn of it all human pomp and state must be overshadowed, all human magnificence grow dim.
13
et super omnes cedros Libani sublimes et erectas, et super omnes quercus Basan,
13
And upon all the tall and lofty cedars of Libanus, and upon all the oaks of Basan.
13
High it will rise above the cedars of Lebanon, that grow so straight and tall, above the oaks of Basan;
14
et super omnes montes excelsos, et super omnes colles elevatos,
14
And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the elevated hills.
14
above aspiring mountain and swelling hill;
15
et super omnem turrim excelsam, et super omnem murum munitum,
15
And upon every high tower, and every fenced wall.
15
above every topless tower, every impregnable citadel,
16
16
And upon all the ships of Tharsis, and upon all that is fair to behold.
16
above all the navies of Tharsis, above every sight that is fair to see.
17
et incurvabitur sublimitas hominum, et humiliabitur altitudo virorum, et elevabitur Dominus solus in die illa;
17
And the loftiness of men shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.
17
Shall not man’s greatness fall to earth, shall not human pride be abated then? No room for any magnificence but the Lord’s, when that day comes.
18
et idola penitus conterentur;
18
And idols shall be utterly destroyed.
18
Vanished the false gods,
19
et introibunt in speluncas petrarum, et in voragines terræ, a facie formidinis Domini et a gloria majestatis ejus, cum surrexerit percutere terram.
19
And they shall go into the holes of rocks, and into the caves of the earth from the face of the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall rise up to strike the earth.
19
only cave in the rock, crevice in the ground will afford shelter, when the Lord comes, great and terrible, when he rises up to smite earth with dread!
20
20
In that day a man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which he had made for himself to adore, moles and bats.
20
Flung away, when that day comes, idols of silver and gold they once made and worshipped; moles and bats all their worship now,
21
Et ingreditur scissuras petrarum et in cavernas saxorum, a facie formidinis Domini, et a gloria majestatis ejus, cum surrexerit percutere terram.
21
And he shall go into the clefts of rocks, and into the holes of stones from the face of the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall rise up to strike the earth.
21
as they slink into clefts of the hills, into rocky caverns, to hide themselves from the terrors of the Lord’s coming, from this sublime majesty that daunts the earth!
22
22
Cease ye therefore from the man, whose breath is in his nostrils, for he is reputed high.
22
Trouble mankind no more; this at least man can boast, he has the breath of life in his nostrils.
