Ecce servus meus, suscipiam eum; electus meus, complacuit sibi in illo anima mea: dedi spiritum meum super eum: judicium gentibus proferet.

Behold my servant, I will uphold him: my elect, my soul delighteth in him: I have given my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

And now, here is my servant, to whom I grant protection, the man of my choice, greatly beloved. My spirit rests upon him, and he will proclaim right order among the Gentiles.

Non clamabit, neque accipiet personam, nec audietur vox ejus foris.

He shall not cry, nor have respect to person, neither shall his voice be heard abroad.

He will not be contentious or a lover of faction; none shall hear his voice in the streets.

Calamum quassatum non conteret, et linum fumigans non extinguet: in veritate educet judicium.

The bruised reed he shall not break, and smoking flax he shall not quench, he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

He will not snap the staff that is already crushed, or put out the wick that still smoulders; but at last he will establish right order unfailingly.

Non erit tristis, neque turbulentus, donec ponat in terra judicium; et legem ejus insulæ exspectabunt.

He shall not be sad, nor troublesome, till he set judgment in the earth: and the islands shall wait for his law.

Not with sternness, not with violence; to set up right order on earth, that is his mission. He has a law to give; in the far-off islands men wait for it eagerly.

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus, creans cælos, et extendens eos; formans terram, et quæ germinant ex ea; dans flatum populo qui est super eam, et spiritum calcantibus eam:

Thus saith the Lord God that created the heavens, and stretched them out: that established the earth, and the things that spring out of it: that giveth breath to the people upon it, and spirit to them that tread thereon.

Thus says the Lord God, he who created the heavens and spread them out, craftsman of the world and all the world affords, he who gives being and breath to all that lives and moves on it:

Ego Dominus vocavi te in justitia, et apprehendi manum tuam, et servavi te: et dedi te in fœdus populi, in lucem gentium,

I the Lord have called thee in justice, and taken thee by the hand, and preserved thee. And I have given thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles:

True to my purpose, I, the Lord, have summoned thee, taking thee by the hand and protecting thee, to make, through thee, a covenant with my own people, to shed, through thee, light over the Gentiles:

ut aperires oculos cæcorum, et educeres de conclusione vinctum, de domo carceris sedentes in tenebris.

That thou mightest open the eyes of the blind, and bring forth the prisoner out of prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

to give sight to blinded eyes, to set the prisoner free from his captivity, from the dungeon where he lies in darkness.

Ego Dominus, hoc est nomen meum; gloriam meam alteri non dabo, et laudem meam sculptilibus.

I the Lord, this is my name: I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to graven things.

I am the Lord, whose name tells of power; I will not let the boast that is mine pass to another, or share my renown with graven gods.

Quæ prima fuerunt, ecce venerunt; nova quoque ego annuntio: antequam oriantur, audita vobis faciam.

The things that were first, behold they are come: and new things do I declare: before they spring forth, I will make you hear them.

What I told you long since, has proved true under your eyes; I tell you now what is still to be; you shall hear of it before ever it comes to light.

Cantate Domino canticum novum, laus ejus ab extremis terræ, qui descenditis in mare, et plenitudo ejus; insulæ, et habitatores earum.

Sing ye to the Lord a new song, his praise is from the ends of the earth: you that go down to the sea, and all that are therein: ye islands, and ye inhabitants of them.

Sing the Lord a new song; let his praise sound from end to end of the earth. Praise him from the sea, all men that sail on it, and all creatures the sea contains; the islands and the island-dwellers.

Sublevetur desertum et civitates ejus. In domibus habitabit Cedar: laudate, habitatores petræ; de vertice montium clamabunt.

Let the desert and the cities thereof be exalted: Cedar shall dwell in houses: ye inhabitants of Petra, give praise, they shall cry from the top of the mountains.

Let the wilderness, now, lift up its head, and the desert cities; the men of Cedar shall have villages to dwell in. Give praise, then, rock-dwellers; the mountain-tops shall ring with their cries.

Ponent Domino gloriam, et laudem ejus in insulis nuntiabunt.

They shall give glory to the Lord, and shall declare his praise in the islands.

All shall give God his praise, till the renown of him reaches the islands far away.

Dominus sicut fortis egredietur, sicut vir præliator suscitabit zelum; vociferabitur, et clamabit: super inimicos suos confortabitur.

The Lord shall go forth as a mighty man, as a man of war shall he stir up zeal: he shall shout and cry: he shall prevail against his enemies.

Like a giant the Lord shall go out to battle, like a warrior that stirs up his own rage, with hue and cry, flouting his enemies.

Tacui semper, silui, patiens fui: sicut parturiens loquar; dissipabo, et absorbebo simul.

I have always held my peace, I have kept silence, I have been patient, I will speak now as a woman in labour: I will destroy, and swallow up at once.

Too long I have been dumb, eaten my heart out, held myself in like a woman in labour; now I will have my say, I will destroy, and as I destroy, devour!

Desertos faciam montes et colles, et omne gramen eorum exsiccabo; et ponam flumina in insulas, et stagna arefaciam.

I will lay waste the mountains and hills, and will make all their grass to wither: and I will turn rivers into islands, and will dry up the standing pools.

I will turn mountain and hill into a waste, withering all their verdure, make barren islands of the rivers, dry up the marshes;

Et ducam cæcos in viam quam nesciunt, et in semitis quas ignoraverunt ambulare eos faciam; ponam tenebras coram eis in lucem, et prava in recta; hæc verba feci eis, et non dereliqui eos.

And I will lead the blind into the way which they know not: and in the paths which they were ignorant of I will make them walk: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight: these things have I done to them, and have not forsaken them.

and I will lead men blindfold by unfamiliar ways, guide their steps by paths unknown to them; I will make the darkness light, and the winding ways straight for them. Such was my promise to them, and were they disappointed of it?

Conversi sunt retrorsum, confundantur confusione, qui confidunt in sculptili; qui dicunt conflatili: Vos dii nostri.

They are turned back: let them be greatly confounded, that trust in a graven thing, that say to a molten thing: You are our god.

See how they are routed, how they blush and blench, the men who trust in graven images, and say to the idols they have cast, You are gods of ours!

Surdi, audite, et cæci, intuemini ad videndum.

Hear, ye deaf, and, ye blind, behold that you may see.

Listen now, you that are deaf; look up, blind eyes, and see.

Quis cæcus, nisi servus meus; et surdus, nisi ad quem nuntios meos misi? quis cæcus, nisi qui venundatus est? et quis cæcus, nisi servus Domini?

Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, but he to whom I have sent my messengers? Who is blind, but he that is sold? or who is blind, but the servant of the Lord?

Who so blind as my servant, who so deaf as he, to whom my messengers were sent? Who so blind, as he that has forfeited his liberty? Who so blind, as the Lord’s servant is?

Qui vides multa, nonne custodies? qui apertas habes aures, nonne audies?

Thou that seest many things, wilt thou not observe them? thou that hast ears open, wilt thou not hear?

Eyes that have seen so much, must they be still unheeding; ears open to every rumour, will they never hear?

Et Dominus voluit ut sanctificaret eum, et magnificaret legem, et extolleret.

And the Lord was willing to sanctify him, and to magnify the law, and exalt it.

It was ever the Lord’s will to sanctify him; so great, so glorious the law he gave him;

Ipse autem populus direptus, et vastatus; laqueus juvenum omnes, et in domibus carcerum absconditi sunt; facti sunt in rapinam, nec est qui eruat; in direptionem, nec est qui dicat: Redde.

But this is a people that is robbed and wasted: they are all the snare of young men, and they are hid in the houses of prisons: they are made a prey, and there is none to deliver them: a spoil, and there is none that saith: Restore.

yet here is a people robbed and spoiled, caught by warriors that have hidden it away in dungeons, a prey there is none to deliver, spoil none bids them restore.

Quis est in vobis qui audiat hoc, attendat, et auscultet futura?

Who is there among you that will give ear to this, that will attend and hearken for times to come?

Which of you will listen to this, and mark it, and give a hearing to prophecy?

Quis dedit in direptionem Jacob, et Israël vastantibus? nonne Dominus ipse, cui peccavimus? Et noluerunt in viis ejus ambulare, et non audierunt legem ejus.

Who hath given Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to robbers? hath not the Lord himself, against whom we have sinned? And they would not walk in his ways, and they have not hearkened to his law.

Who was it that made Jacob a spoil, gave Israel up into the hands of the conqueror? It was that Lord, against whom we have sinned. Because his ways lay untrodden, his laws went unheeded,

Et effudit super eum indignationem furoris sui, et forte bellum; et combussit eum in circuitu, et non cognovit; et succendit eum, et non intellexit.

And he hath poured out upon him the indignation of his fury, and a strong battle, and hath burnt him round about, and he knew not: and set him on fire, and he understood not.

he poured out on Israel his angry retribution, war without mercy; and they? The flames burned round them, and they could not read the lesson, scorched them, and still they could not understand.
