Chapter 40
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
In vigesimo quinto anno transmigrationis nostræ, in exordio anni, decima mensis, quartodecimo anno postquam percussa est civitas, in ipsa hac die, facta est super me manus Domini, et adduxit me illuc.
1
In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, the tenth day of the month, the fourteenth year after the city was destroyed: in the selfsame day the hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me thither.
1
It was the tenth day of the month; the twenty-fifth year of our banishment, and the fourteenth since the fall of the city, was just beginning. This was the precise day upon which the Lord’s power came over me, and I fell into a transport;
2
In visionibus Dei adduxit me in terram Israël, et dimisit me super montem excelsum nimis, super quem erat quasi ædificium civitatis vergentis ad austrum.
2
In the visions of God he brought me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain: upon which there was as the building of a city, bending towards the south.
2
in which transport, so the divine revelation would have it, I was carried off to the country of Israel. There, I found myself on the top of a very high mountain, that seemed to have a city built on it, sloping away towards the south.
3
3
And he brought me in thither, and behold a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed in his hand, and he stood in the gate.
3
Into this city I was taken, and there met a man whose look dazzled the eye like bronze; he stood there in the gateway, holding a flaxen cord and a measuring-rod.
4
4
And this man said to me: Son of man, see with thy eyes, and hear with thy ears, and set thy heart upon all that I shall shew thee: for thou art brought hither that they may be shewn to thee: declare all that thou seest, to the house of Israel.
4
The open eye, son of man, said he, the open ear, and mark well all I shew thee! Thou wast brought here to see, and tell the men of Israel what thou seest.
5
Et ecce murus forinsecus in circuitu domus undique: et in manu viri calamus mensuræ sex cubitorum et palmo: et mensus est latitudinem ædificii calamo uno, altitudinem quoque calamo uno.
5
And behold there was a wall on the outside of the house round about, and in the man’s hand a measuring reed of six cubits and a handbreadth: and he measured the breadth of the building one reed, and the height one reed.
5
There was an outer wall that ran round the whole building, which he measured with his rod, that was six cubits and a palm in length; a rod’s thickness there was in the wall, and a rod’s height;
6
6
And he came to the gate that looked toward the east, and he went up the steps thereof: and he measured the breadth of the threshold of the gate one reed, that is, one threshold was one reed broad:
6
when he came to the gate at the eastern approach and had mounted the stairs of it, the entrance-way was spanned by a single rod; each entrance was of a rod’s thickness.
7
7
And every little chamber was one reed long, and one reed broad: and between the little chambers were five cubits:
7
Within were guard-chambers, six cubits square and five cubits apart;
8
Et limen portæ, juxta vestibulum portæ intrinsecus, calamo uno.
8
And the threshold of the gate by the porch of the gate within, was one reed.
8
then came an inner gateway, a rod’s length deep;
9
9
And he measured the porch of the gate eight cubits, and the front thereof two cubits: and the porch of the gate was inward.
9
then an inner entrance-hall, measuring eight cubits across, with pillars two cubits thick.
10
10
And the little chambers of the gate that looked eastward were three on this side, and three on that side: all three were of one measure, and the fronts of one measure, on both parts.
10
This eastern gateway had three guard-chambers on each side, alike in size, and alike in size the pillars between them.
11
11
And he measured the breadth of the threshold of the gate ten cubits: and the length of the gate thirteen cubits:
11
The entrance of the gateway was ten cubits across, and the span of the gateway itself thirteen cubits;
12
12
And the border before the little chambers one cubit: and one cubit was the border on both sides: and the little chambers were six cubits on this side and that side.
12
on either side the six-cubit guard-chamber was set a cubit back.
13
13
And he measured the gate from the roof of one little chamber to the roof of another, in breadth five and twenty cubits: door against door.
13
From gable-window of guard-room to gable-window of guard-room opposite was twenty-five cubits.
14
14
He made also fronts of sixty cubits: and to the front the court of the gate on every side round about.
14
(And he made the whole length of the colonnade sixty cubits, but this was measuring right up to the pillars which stood out round the gateway);
15
Et ante faciem portæ quæ pertingebat usque ad faciem vestibuli portæ interioris, quinquaginta cubitos.
15
And before the face of the gate which reached even to the face of the porch of the inner gate, fifty cubits.
15
the distance from the outer gate to the inner was fifty cubits …
16
16
And slanting windows in the little chambers, and in their fronts, which were within the gate on every side round about: and in like manner there were also in the porches windows round about within, and before the fronts the representation of palm trees.
16
and slanting windows in the guard-chambers and in the thickness of the walls that separated them, all round the gateway; the hall, too, within had its windows all round, and there was a pattern of palm-trees on the pillars between them.
17
17
And he brought me into the outward court, and behold there were chambers, and a pavement of stone in the court round about: thirty chambers encompassed the pavement.
17
So he led me into the outer courtyard, which was surrounded by parlours, that had the ground about them paved with stone; there were thirty parlours standing in this strip of pavement.
18
Et pavimentum in fronte portarum, secundum longitudinem portarum erat inferius.
18
And the pavement in the front of the gates according to the length of the gates was lower.
18
It stretched up to the gateways, and was broad as they were long; like them, it was on the level of the ground.
19
19
And he measured the breadth from the face of the lower gate to the front of the inner court without, a hundred cubits to the east, and to the north.
19
And now he measured the distance from the eastern gate to the inner courtyard, where they stood fronting one another; it was a hundred cubits. As with the east, so with the north;
20
Portam quoque quæ respiciebat viam aquilonis atrii exterioris, mensus est tam in longitudine quam in latitudine.
20
He measured also both the length and the breadth of the gate of the outward court, which looked northward.
20
length and breadth he must measure of the outer gate that looked northwards.
21
Et thalamos ejus tres hinc et tres inde, et frontem ejus et vestibulum ejus secundum mensuram portæ prioris, quinquaginta cubitorum longitudinem ejus, et latitudinem viginti quinque cubitorum.
21
And the little chambers thereof three on this side, and three on that side: and the front thereof, and the porch thereof according to the measure of the former gate, fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
21
This, too, was fifty cubits long and twenty-five broad; it had guard-chambers, three on each side, pillar and hall like the other.
22
22
And the windows thereof, and the porch, and the gravings according to the measure of the gate that looked to the east, and they went up to it by seven steps, and a porch was before it.
22
Hall and windows and palm-tree pattern differed nothing from those of the eastern gate; all was the same, from the seven steps of the approach to the hall within.
23
23
And the gate of the inner court was over against the gate of the north, and that of the east: and he measured from gate to gate a hundred cubits.
23
As on the east, so on the north, the inner court had a gateway matching it, a hundred cubits distant.
24
24
And he brought me out to the way of the south, and behold the gate that looked to the south: and he measured the front thereof, and the porch thereof according to the former measures.
24
And next he took me to the south, where there was a fresh gate, which he measured, pillar of it and hall of it, as before;
25
Et fenestras ejus, et vestibula in circuitu, sicut fenestras ceteras: quinquaginta cubitorum longitudine, et latitudine viginti quinque cubitorum.
25
And the windows thereof, and the porches round about, as the other windows: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits.
25
the same windows about the hall, the same length and breadth;
26
26
And there were seven steps to go up to it: and a porch before the doors thereof: and there were graven palm trees, one on this side, and another on that side in the front thereof.
26
the seven steps, the hall at the further end, the pillars with a palm-tree patterned on either side.
27
27
And there was a gate of the inner court towards the south: and he measured from gate to gate towards the south, a hundred cubits.
27
Here, too, a hundred cubits away, was a gateway on the south side of the inner courtyard.
28
28
And he brought me into the inner court at the south gate: and he measured the gate according to the former measures.
28
It was through this southern gateway of it that he led me into the inner courtyard itself; a gateway with the same measurements as before,
29
Thalamum ejus, et frontem ejus, et vestibulum ejus eisdem mensuris, et fenestras ejus, et vestibulum ejus in circuitu, quinquaginta cubitos longitudinis, et latitudinis viginti quinque cubitos.
29
The little chamber thereof, and the front thereof, and the porch thereof with the same measures: and the windows thereof, and the porch thereof round about it was fifty cubits in length, and five and twenty cubits in breadth.
29
guard-chamber and pillar and hall. It had the same windows and window-pillars, the same length and breadth,
30
30
And the porch round about was five and twenty cubits long, and five cubits broad.
30
and the porch round it was twenty-five cubits long, five cubits broad.
31
31
And the porch thereof to the outward court, and the palm trees thereof in the front: and there were eight steps to go up to it.
31
The pillars had the same pattern, but this time the hall was on the outer side of the gateway, and there were eight steps instead of seven.
32
32
And he brought me into the inner court by the way of the east: and he measured the gate according to the former measures.
32
Then he took me to the east side of the inner court, with the same measurements,
33
Thalamum ejus, et frontem ejus, et vestibulum ejus, sicut supra: et fenestras ejus, et vestibula ejus in circuitu, longitudine quinquaginta cubitorum, et latitudine viginti quinque cubitorum.
33
The little chamber thereof, and the front thereof, and the porch thereof as before: and the windows thereof, and the porches thereof round about it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
33
guard-chamber and pillar and hall, window and window-pillar, length and breadth;
34
Et vestibulum ejus, id est, atrii exterioris, et palmæ cælatæ in fronte ejus, hinc et inde: et in octo gradibus ascensus ejus.
34
And the porch thereof, that is, of the outward court: and the graven palm trees in the front thereof on this side and on that side: and the going up thereof was by eight steps.
34
the pillared hall again facing the outer court, the steps eight in number.
35
35
And he brought me into the gate that looked to the north: and he measured according to the former measures.
35
And next to the northern gate, with the same measurements still,
36
36
The little chamber thereof, and the front thereof, and the porch thereof, and the windows thereof round about it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
36
guard-chamber and pillar and hall and windows and length and breadth;
37
37
And the porch thereof looked to the outward court: and the graving of palm trees in the front thereof was on this side and on that side: and the going up to it was by eight steps.
37
the pillared hall facing outwards, the eight steps.
38
38
And at every chamber was a door in the forefronts of the gates: there they washed the holocaust.
38
… and each ante-chamber had a door, between pillars. This was where they washed the victims for burnt-sacrifice;
39
39
And in the porch of the gate were two tables on this side, and two tables on that side: that the holocaust, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering might be slain thereon.
39
and in the hall of the entrance-way there were two tables on each side, for the slaying of the victims, whether it were a burnt-sacrifice, or some offering for a fault or for a wrong done.
40
40
And on the outward side, which goeth up to the entry of the gate that looketh toward the north, were two tables: and at the other side before the porch of the gate were two tables.
40
On the outer side of the gateway, towards the north gate, and again on the opposite side, there were two more tables, close to the hall.
41
quatuor mensæ hinc, et quatuor mensæ inde: per latera portæ octo mensæ erant, super quas immolabant.
41
Four tables were on this side, and four tables on that side: at the sides of the gate were eight tables, upon which they slew the victims.
41
Thus altogether there were eight tables ranged along the side of the entrance-way, all for sacrifice.
42
42
And the four tables for the holocausts were made of square stones: one cubit and a half long, and one cubit and a half broad, and one cubit high: to lay the vessels upon, in which the holocaust and the victim is slain.
42
And for the burnt-sacrifice there were four other tables of hewn stone, a cubit and a half square, and a cubit in height; here they laid the instruments needed for sacrifice and offering;
43
43
And the borders of them were of one handbreadth, turned inwards round about: and upon the tables was the flesh of the offering.
43
they had ledges, too, curving upwards all round, a palm in breadth, for these tables must also hold the flesh of the victims.
44
44
And without the inner gate were the chambers of the singing men in the inner court, which was on the side of the gate that looketh to the north: and their prospect was towards the south, one at the side of the east gate, which looketh toward the north.
44
In the inner court itself, beyond the gateway, the singers had their lodging, on the north side, facing south. There was a parlour, too, at the side of the eastern gate, facing … north;
45
45
And he said to me: This chamber, which looketh toward the south shall be for the priests that watch in the wards of the temple.
45
the one facing south, he told me, was for the priests who kept watch over the temple,
46
46
But the chamber that looketh towards the north shall be for the priests that watch over the ministry of the altar. These are the sons of Sadoc, who among the sons of Levi, come near to the Lord, to minister to him.
46
the one facing north for the priests who are busied with the service of the altar, Sadocite Levites, that were the Lord’s privileged ministers.
47
47
And he measured the court a hundred cubits long, and a hundred cubits broad foursquare: and the altar that was before the face of the temple.
47
The court, with the altar standing in it, was a hundred cubits square.
48
Et introduxit me in vestibulum templi: et mensus est vestibulum quinque cubitis hinc, et quinque cubitis inde: et latitudinem portæ trium cubitorum hinc, et trium cubitorum inde.
48
And he brought me into the porch of the temple: and he measured the porch five cubits on this side, and five cubits on that side: and the breadth of the gate three cubits on this side, and three cubits on that side.
48
Then he led me to the porch of the temple; the jamb on either side was five cubits deep, and the width of the gate … three cubits on either side;
49
49
And the length of the porch was twenty cubits, and the breadth eleven cubits, and there were eight steps to go up to it. And there were pillars in the fronts: one on this side, and another on that side.
49
the porch itself was twenty cubits long and eleven broad. As we climbed up the eight steps to it, there were columns facing us, one on either side.
