1 And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife that shaveth the hair: and cause it to pass over thy head, and over thy beard: and take thee a balance to weigh in, and divide the hair. |
1 And next, son of man, to the sharp sword betake thee! A razor thou must take, and pass it over head and beard both; then weigh thy hair in the scales and make equal portions of it. |
2 Tertiam partem igni combures in medio civitatis, juxta completionem dierum obsidionis, et assumes tertiam partem, et concides gladio in circuitu ejus: tertiam vero aliam disperges in ventum, et gladium nudabo post eos. |
2 A third part thou shalt burn with fire in the midst of the city, according to the fulfilling of the days of the siege: and thou shalt take a third part, and cut it in pieces with the knife all round about: and the other third part thou shalt scatter in the wind, and I will draw out the sword after them. |
2 A third of it thou shalt set alight and burn up within this city of thine, when the days of its besieging are over; a third thou shalt cut to pieces with the blade thou carriest, round about it; and a third thou shalt scatter to the winds, for my unsheathed sword to go in pursuit. |
3 Et sumes inde parvum numerum, et ligabis eos in summitate pallii tui: |
3 And thou shalt take thereof a small number: and shalt bind them in the skirt of thy cloak. |
3 Of this last third, gather some few hairs and secure them in the fold of thy cloak; |
4 And thou shalt take of them again, and shalt cast them in the midst of the fire, and shalt burn them with fire: and out of it shall come forth a fire into all the house of Israel. |
4 yet even of these take some away and throw them into the heart of the fire, to burn there; fire enough to kindle the whole race of Israel! |
5 Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Ista est Jerusalem: in medio gentium posui eam, et in circuitu ejus terras. |
5 Thus saith the Lord God: This is Jerusalem, I have set her in the midst of the nations, and the countries round about her. |
5 Look you, says the Lord God, here is Jerusalem, that I have set down at earth’s very midst, the nations all about her, |
6 And she hath despised my judgments, so as to be more wicked than the Gentiles; and my commandments, more than the countries that are round about her: for they have cast off my judgments, and have not walked in my commandments. |
6 and she has defied my will, than the very heathen more rebellious, defied my commandments, as neighbouring peoples never did. My bidding they have cast to the winds, followed never where my commandments led. |
7 Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Because you have surpassed the Gentiles that are round about you, and have not walked in my commandments, and have not kept my judgments, and have not done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you: |
7 All your neighbours, the Lord God says, outdone in wickedness, my paths untrodden, my bidding unheeded! False even to the heathen traditions of yonder country-side! |
8 ideo hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Ecce ego ad te, et ipse ego faciam in medio tui judicia in oculis gentium: |
8 Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold I come against thee, and I myself will execute judgments in the midst of thee in the sight of the Gentiles. |
8 Have at thee, says the Lord God; in thy very heart I will execute judgement for all the world to see; |
9 And I will do in thee that which I have not done: and the like to which I will do no more, because of all thy abominations. |
9 such punishment I will inflict as never was before, never shall be again, for thy detestable doings. |
10 Ideo patres comedent filios in medio tui, et filii comedent patres suos: et faciam in te judicia, et ventilabo universas reliquias tuas in omnem ventum. |
10 Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers: and I will execute judgments in thee, and I will scatter thy whole remnant into every wind. |
10 Men’s flesh men shall eat, father of son and son of father; then, when my sentence is executed, I will scatter all that is left of thee to the four winds. |
11 Therefore as I live, saith the Lord God: Because thou hast violated my sanctuary with all thy offences, and with all thy abominations: I will also break thee in pieces, and my eye shall not spare, and I will not have any pity. |
11 As I am a living God, the Lord says, since thou hast not scrupled to profane my sanctuary with vile things and detestable things a many, I will make havoc of thee, and my eye shall not melt with pity; I will not scruple in my turn. |
12 Tertia pars tui peste morietur, et fame consumetur in medio tui, et tertia pars tui in gladio cadet in circuitu tuo: tertiam vero partem tuam in omnem ventum dispergam, et gladium evaginabo post eos. |
12 A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and shall be consumed with famine in the midst of thee: and a third part of thee shall fall by the sword round about thee: and a third part of thee will I scatter into every wind, and I will draw out a sword after them. |
12 A third of thy sons shall die of pestilence, or with famine pine away; a third shall fall in thy defence; a third I will scatter to the four winds, and my sword unsheathed in pursuit. |
13 And I will accomplish my fury, and will cause my indignation to rest upon them, and I will be comforted: and they shall know that I the Lord have spoken it in my zeal, when I shall have accomplished my indignation in them. |
13 And at last, my anger spent, my vengeance glutted, my grief healed, doubt they shall not that the God whom they slighted has decreed it; my sentence shall take full toll of them. |
14 And I will make thee desolate, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of every one that passeth by. |
14 Desolate, and the scorn of thy neighbours, so every passer-by shall see thee. |
15 And thou shalt be a reproach, and a scoff, an example, and an astonishment amongst the nations that are round about thee, when I shall have executed judgments in thee in anger, and in indignation, and in wrathful rebukes. |
15 A name of scorn and reproach, a by-word thou shalt be and a thing of horror, to all the nations about thee, when thy punishment is done, so fierce the anger, so shrewd the blow; |
16 Ego Dominus locutus sum: quando misero sagittas famis pessimas in eos, quæ erunt mortiferæ, et quas mittam ut disperdam vos: et famem congregabo super vos, et conteram in vobis baculum panis: |
16 I the Lord have spoken it: When I shall send upon them the grievous arrows of famine, which shall bring death, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will gather together famine against you: and I will break among you the staff of bread. |
16 I, the Lord, have decreed it. Hungry arrows of mine shall fly abroad, dolorous and deadly, for your minishing; famine that grows worse and worse as the stocks of bread fail, |
Ego Dominus locutus sum. |
17 And I will send in upon you famine, and evil beasts unto utter destruction: and pestilence, and blood shall pass through thee, and I will bring in the sword upon thee. I the Lord have spoken it. |
17 and with the famine wild beasts to bereave you, visitations of plague and violent death; and the sword too, I will let loose upon you; I, the Lord, have decreed it. |
