Chapter 10
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
Et vidi: et ecce in firmamento quod erat super caput cherubim, quasi lapis sapphirus, quasi species similitudinis solii, apparuit super ea.
1
And I saw and behold in the firmament that was over the heads of the cherubims, there appeared over them as it were the sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne.
1
And now I looked up at the vault over the cherubim, and there was the hue of sapphire, and the likeness of a throne.
2
2
And he spoke to the man, that was clothed with linen, and said: Go in between the wheels that are under the cherubims and fill thy hand with the coals of fire that are between the cherubims, and pour them out upon the city. And he went in, in my sight:
2
And his word came to the man clad in linen, Make thy way in where the whirring is loudest, beneath the cherubim, take a handful of the coals that lie there among them, and pour these out over the city. So I watched him make his way in;
3
3
And the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court.
3
and all the while, as he did so, the cherubs were standing close to the right of the temple, and the inner court was full of smoke.
4
4
And the glory of the Lord was lifted up from above the cherub to the threshold of the house: and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the Lord.
4
And the brightness of the Lord’s presence, cherub-throned, rose up above the threshold, till the house was all smoke, and all the precincts filled with the divine radiance;
5
Et sonitus alarum cherubim audiebatur usque ad atrium exterius, quasi vox Dei omnipotentis loquentis.
5
And the sound of the wings of the cherubims was heard even to the outward court as the voice of God Almighty speaking.
5
and ever the beating of the cherubs’ wings could be heard in the outer court, loud as the voice of the Omnipotent heard in thunder.
6
6
And when he had commanded the man that was clothed with linen, saying: Take fire from the midst of the wheels that are between the cherubims: he went in and stood beside the wheel.
6
There by the wheels stood the man clad in linen, ready to receive the cherub-guarded flame as he was bidden;
7
7
And one cherub stretched out his arm from the midst of the cherubims to the fire that was between the cherubims: and he took, and put it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen: who took it and went forth.
7
and one cherub, parting from the rest, reached hand out, took fire from the midst, and gave it him; so he went on his errand.
8
Et apparuit in cherubim similitudo manus hominis subtus pennas eorum.
8
And there appeared in the cherubims the likeness of a man’s hand under their wings.
8
Cherub hand shewed under every cherub wing.
9
Et vidi: et ecce quatuor rotæ juxta cherubim: rota una juxta cherub unum, et rota alia juxta cherub unum: species autem rotarum erat quasi visio lapidis chrysolithi:
9
And I saw, and behold there were four wheels by the cherubims: one wheel by one cherub, and another wheel by another cherub: and the appearance of the wheels was to the sight like the chrysolite stone:
9
Such was the vision I saw; four wheels beside four cherubim, one by each, and their colour shewed like aquamarine;
10
10
And as to their appearance, all four were alike: as if a wheel were in the midst of a wheel.
10
all alike had the same appearance, of a wheel within a wheel.
11
11
And when they went, they went by four ways: and they turned not when they went: but to the place whither they first turned, the rest also followed, and did not turn back.
11
Moved they to this quarter or that, they followed ever without ado the lead of the foremost; there was no turning about when they moved.
12
Et omne corpus earum, et colla, et manus, et pennæ, et circuli, plena erant oculis in circuitu quatuor rotarum.
12
And their whole body, and their necks, and their hands, and their wings, and the circles were full of eyes, round about the four wheels.
12
Eyes were everywhere, on body and neck and hand and wing and wheel too, for each cherub had its own wheel.
13
Et rotas istas vocavit volubiles, audiente me.
13
And these wheels he called voluble, in my hearing.
13
(It was these wheels I had heard spoken of as the whirring. )
14
14
And every one had four faces: one face was the face of a cherub, and the second face, the face of a man: and in the third was the face of a lion: and in the fourth the face of an eagle.
14
Fourfold was the semblance of them, now cherub, now man, now lion, now eagle.
15
15
And the cherubims were lifted up: this is the living creature that I had seen by the river Chobar.
15
They rose aloft, these cherubim, (such living figures as I had seen by Chobar;
16
16
And when the cherubims went, the wheels also went by them: and when the cherubims lifted up their wings, to mount up from the earth, the wheels stayed not behind, but were by them.
16
the wheels accompanying them as they went, never left behind, but still at their side when they spread their wings for flight,
17
17
When they stood, these stood: and when they were lifted up, these were lifted up: for the spirit of life was in them.
17
resting when they rested, rising when they rose; these too had a living impulse in them),
18
18
And the glory of the Lord went forth from the threshold of the temple: and stood over the cherubims.
18
and therewith the bright presence of the Lord left the temple threshold, and stood there, cherub-throned.
19
Et elevantia cherubim alas suas, exaltata sunt a terra coram me: et illis egredientibus, rotæ quoque subsecutæ sunt: et stetit in introitu portæ domus Domini orientalis, et gloria Dei Israël erat super ea.
19
And the cherubims lifting up their wings, were raised from the earth before me: and as they went out, the wheels also followed: and it stood in the entry of the east gate of the house of the Lord: and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.
19
With my own eyes I saw them, as they spread their wings and rose aloft; saw the wheels follow as they went; saw a halt made at the eastern gate of the temple, and the Lord’s bright presence resting above them.
20
20
This is the living creature, which I saw under the God of Israel by the river Chobar: and I understood that they were cherubims.
20
Full well I knew that cherubs they were, these living figures I had seen bearing God’s throne by Chobar,
21
Quatuor vultus uni, et quatuor alæ uni: et similitudo manus hominis sub alis eorum.
21
Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings: and the likeness of a man’s hand was under their wings.
21
each with four semblances, and four wings, and human hands shewing under their wings;
22
Et similitudo vultuum eorum, ipsi vultus quos videram juxta fluvium Chobar, et intuitus eorum, et impetus singulorum ante faciem suam ingredi.
22
And as to the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces which I had seen by the river Chobar, and their looks, and the impulse of every one to go straight forward.
22
the same faces, the same looks, I had seen by Chobar, the same onward impulse of their journeying.
