Aleph Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.

Ah, blessed they, who pass through life’s journey unstained, who follow the law of the Lord!

Blessed are they that search his testimonies: that seek him with their whole heart.

Ah, blessed they, who cherish his decrees, make him the whole quest of their hearts!

Beati qui scrutantur testimonia ejus; in toto corde exquirunt eum.

For they that work iniquity, have not walked in his ways.

Afar from wrong-doing, thy sure paths they tread.

Non enim qui operantur iniquitatem in viis ejus ambulaverunt.

Thou hast commanded thy commandments to be kept most diligently.

Above all else it binds us, the charge thou hast given us to keep.

Tu mandasti mandata tua custodiri nimis.

O! that my ways may be directed to keep thy justifications.

Ah, how shall my steps be surely guided to keep faith with thy covenant?

Utinam dirigantur viæ meæ ad custodiendas justificationes tuas.

Then shall I not be confounded, when I shall look into all thy commandments.

Attentive to all thy commandments, I go my way undismayed.

Tunc non confundar, cum perspexero in omnibus mandatis tuis.

I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned the judgments of thy justice.

A true heart’s worship thou shalt have, thy just awards prompting me.

Confitebor tibi in directione cordis, in eo quod didici judicia justitiæ tuæ.

I will keep thy justifications: O! do not thou utterly forsake me.

All shall be done thy laws demand, so thou wilt not forsake me utterly.

Justificationes tuas custodiam; non me derelinquas usquequaque.

Beth By what doth a young man correct his way? by observing thy words.

Best shall he keep his youth unstained, who is true to thy trust.

With my whole heart have I sought after thee: let me not stray from thy commandments.

Be thou the whole quest of my heart; never let me turn aside from thy commandments.

I have been delighted in the way of thy testimonies, as in all riches.

Blithely as one that has found great possessions, I follow thy decrees.

For princes sat, and spoke against me: but thy servant was employed in thy justifications.

Closeted together, princes plot against me, thy servant, that thinks only of thy decrees.

Etenim sederunt principes, et adversum me loquebantur; servus autem tuus exercebatur in justificationibus tuis.

For thy testimonies are my meditation: and thy justifications my counsel.

Claims lovingly cherished, decrees that are my counsellors!

Nam et testimonia tua meditatio mea est, et consilium meum justificationes tuæ.

Deep lies my soul in the dust, restore life to me, as thou hast promised.

My soul hath slumbered through heaviness: strengthen thou me in thy words.

HE Set before me for a law the way of thy justifications, O Lord: and I will always seek after it.

Behold I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy justice.

Each command of thine I embrace lovingly; do thou in thy faithfulness grant me life.

VAU Let thy mercy also come upon me, O Lord: thy salvation according to thy word.

For me too, Lord, thy mercy, for me too the deliverance thou hast promised!

So shall I answer them that reproach me in any thing; that I have trusted in thy words.

Fit answer for those who taunt me, that I rely on thy truth.

And take not thou the word of truth utterly out of my mouth: for in thy words, I have hoped exceedingly.

Faithful thy promise, let me not boast in vain; in thy covenant lies my hope.

So shall I always keep thy law, for ever and ever.

For ever and for evermore true to thy charge thou shalt find me.

And I walked at large: because I have sought after thy commandments.

Freely shall my feet tread, if thy will is all my quest.

Et ambulabam in latitudine, quia mandata tua exquisivi.

And I spoke of thy testimonies before kings: and I was not ashamed.

Fearlessly will I talk of thy decrees in the presence of kings, and be never abashed.

Et loquebar in testimoniis tuis in conspectu regum, et non confundebar.

I meditated also on thy commandments, which I loved.

Fain would I have all my comfort in the law I love.

Et meditabar in mandatis tuis, quæ dilexi.

And I lifted up my hands to thy commandments, which I loved: and I was exercised in thy justifications.

Flung wide my arms to greet thy law, ever in my thoughts thy bidding.

Et levavi manus meas ad mandata tua, quæ dilexi, et exercebar in justificationibus tuis.

ZAIN. Be thou mindful of thy word to thy servant, in which thou hast given me hope.

Go not back on the word thou hast pledged to thy servant; there lies all my hope.

Zain Memor esto verbi tui servo tuo, in quo mihi spem dedisti.

This hath comforted me in my humiliation: because thy word hath enlivened me.

Good news in my affliction, thy promises have brought me life.

Hæc me consolata est in humilitate mea, quia eloquium tuum vivificavit me.

The proud did iniquitously altogether: but I declined not from thy law.

Ground down by the scorn of my oppressors, never from thy law I swerve aside.

Superbi inique agebant usquequaque; a lege autem tua non declinavi.

I remembered, O Lord, thy judgments of old: and I was comforted.

Gracious comfort, Lord, is the memory of thy just dealings in times long past.

Memor fui judiciorum tuorum a sæculo, Domine, et consolatus sum.

A fainting hath taken hold of me, because of the wicked that forsake thy law.

Great ruth have I to see wrong-doers, and how they abandon thy law.

Defectio tenuit me, pro peccatoribus derelinquentibus legem tuam.

Thy justifications were the subject of my song, in the place of my pilgrimage.

Gone out into a land of exile, of thy covenant I make my song.

Cantabiles mihi erant justificationes tuæ in loco peregrinationis meæ.

In the night I have remembered thy name, O Lord: and have kept thy law.

Gloom of the night finds me still thinking of thy name, Lord, still observant of thy bidding.

Memor fui nocte nominis tui, Domine, et custodivi legem tuam.

This happened to me: because I sought after thy justifications.

Guerdon I ask no other, but the following of thy will.

HETH. O Lord, my portion, I have said, I would keep thy law.

Heritage, Lord, I claim no other, but to obey thy word.

I entreated thy face with all my heart: have mercy on me according to thy word.

Heart-deep my supplication before thee for the mercies thou hast promised.

Deprecatus sum faciem tuam in toto corde meo; miserere mei secundum eloquium tuum.

I have thought on my ways: and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.

Have I not planned out my path, turned aside to follow thy decrees?

Cogitavi vias meas, et converti pedes meos in testimonia tua.

I am ready, and am not troubled: that I may keep thy commandments.

Haste such as mine can brook no delay in carrying out all thy bidding.

Paratus sum, et non sum turbatus, ut custodiam mandata tua.

The cords of the wicked have encompassed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.

Hemmed in by the snares which sinners laid for me, never was I forgetful of thy law.

Funes peccatorum circumplexi sunt me, et legem tuam non sum oblitus.

I rose at midnight to give praise to thee; for the judgments of thy justification.

Hearken when I rise at dead of night to praise thee for thy just dealings.

Media nocte surgebam ad confitendum tibi, super judicia justificationis tuæ.

I am a partaker with all them that fear thee, and that keep thy commandments.

How well I love the souls that fear thee, and are true to thy trust!

Particeps ego sum omnium timentium te, et custodientium mandata tua.

The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy justifications.

How thy mercy fills the earth, Lord! Teach me to do thy will.

Misericordia tua, Domine, plena est terra; justificationes tuas doce me.

TETH. Thou hast done well with thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word.

In fulfilment of thy promise, Lord, what kindness thou hast shewn thy servant!

Teth Bonitatem fecisti cum servo tuo, Domine, secundum verbum tuum.

Teach me goodness and discipline and knowledge; for I have believed thy commandments.

Inspire, instruct me still; all my hope is in thy covenant.

Bonitatem, et disciplinam, et scientiam doce me, quia mandatis tuis credidi.

Before I was humbled I offended; therefore have I kept thy word.

Idly I strayed till thou didst chasten me; no more shall thy warnings go unheeded.

Priusquam humiliarer ego deliqui: propterea eloquium tuum custodivi.

Thou art good; and in thy goodness teach me thy justifications.

Indeed, indeed thou art gracious; teach me to do thy bidding.

The iniquity of the proud hath been multiplied over me: but I will seek thy commandments with my whole heart.

In vain my oppressors plot against me; thy will is all my quest.

Multiplicata est super me iniquitas superborum; ego autem in toto corde meo scrutabor mandata tua.

Their heart is curdled like milk: but I have meditated on thy law.

Inhuman hearts, curdled with scorn! For me, thy law is enough.

Coagulatum est sicut lac cor eorum; ego vero legem tuam meditatus sum.

It is good for me that thou hast humbled me, that I may learn thy justifications.

It was in mercy thou didst chasten me, schooling me to thy obedience.

Bonum mihi quia humiliasti me, ut discam justificationes tuas.

The law of thy mouth is good to me, above thousands of gold and silver.

Is not the law thou hast given dearer to me than rich store of gold and silver?

Bonum mihi lex oris tui, super millia auri et argenti.

JOD. Thy hands have made me and formed me: give me understanding, and I will learn thy commandments.

Jealous for the handiwork thou hast made, teach me to understand thy commandments.

JodManus tuæ fecerunt me, et plasmaverunt me: da mihi intellectum, et discam mandata tua.

They that fear thee shall see me, and shall be glad : because I have greatly hoped in thy words.

Joy shall be theirs, thy true worshippers, to see the confidence I have in thy word.

Qui timent te videbunt me et lætabuntur, quia in verba tua supersperavi.

I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are equity: and in thy truth thou hast humbled me.

Just are thy awards; I know well, Lord, it was in faithfulness thou didst afflict me.

Cognovi, Domine, quia æquitas judicia tua, et in veritate tua humiliasti me.

O! let thy mercy be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.

Judge me no more; pity and comfort thy servant as thou hast promised.

Let thy tender mercies come unto me, and I shall live: for thy law is my meditation.

Let the proud be ashamed, because they have done unjustly towards me: but I will be employed in thy commandments.

Just be their fall, who wrong me scornfully; thy law is all my study.

Let them that fear thee turn to me: and they that know thy testimonies.

Keeping watch for the fulfilment of thy promise, my eyes languish for comfort still delayed.

For I am become like a bottle in the frost: I have not forgotten thy justifications.

Kitchen-smoke shrivels the wine-skin; so waste I, yet never forget thy will.

Quia factus sum sicut uter in pruina; justificationes tuas non sum oblitus.

How many are the days of thy servant: when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?

Knowest thou not how short are thy servant’s days? Soon be my wrongs redressed.

Quot sunt dies servi tui? quando facies de persequentibus me judicium?

The wicked have told me fables: but not as thy law.

Knaves will be plotting against me still, that are no friends to thy law.

Narraverunt mihi iniqui fabulationes, sed non ut lex tua.

All thy statutes are truth: they have persecuted me unjustly, do thou help me.

Knaves they are that wrong me; bring aid, as thy covenant stands unchanging.

Omnia mandata tua veritas: inique persecuti sunt me, adjuva me.

They had almost made an end of me upon earth: but I have not forsaken thy commandments.

Keep thy bidding I would, though small hope of life they had left me.

Paulominus consummaverunt me in terra; ego autem non dereliqui mandata tua.

Quicken thou me according to thy mercy: and I shall keep the testimonies of thy mouth.

Kind as thou ever wert, preserve me; then utter thy bidding, and I will obey.

Secundum misericordiam tuam vivifica me, et custodiam testimonia oris tui.

LAMED. For ever, O Lord, thy word standeth firm in heaven.

Lord, the word thou hast spoken stands ever unchanged as heaven.

Lamed In æternum, Domine, verbum tuum permanet in cælo.

Thy truth unto all generations: thou hast founded the earth, and it continueth.

Loyal to his promise, age after age, is he who made the enduring earth.

In generationem et generationem veritas tua; fundasti terram, et permanet.

By thy ordinance the day goeth on: for all things serve thee.

Long as time lasts, these shall stand, obeying thy decree, Master of all.

Ordinatione tua perseverat dies, quoniam omnia serviunt tibi.

Unless thy law had been my meditation, I had then perhaps perished in my abjection.

Lest I should sink in my affliction, thou hast given thy covenant to be my comfort.

Nisi quod lex tua meditatio mea est, tunc forte periissem in humilitate mea.

Thy justifications I will never forget: for by them thou hast given me life.

Life-giving are thy commands, never by me forgotten.

In æternum non obliviscar justificationes tuas, quia in ipsis vivificasti me.

I am thine, save thou me: for I have sought thy justifications.

Lend me thy aid, for thine I am, and thy bidding is all my quest.

The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I have understood thy testimonies.

Let sinners go about to destroy me, I wait on thy will.

Me exspectaverunt peccatores ut perderent me; testimonia tua intellexi.

I have seen an end of all perfection: thy commandment is exceeding broad.

Look where I may, all good things must end; only thy law is wide beyond measure.

Omnis consummationis vidi finem, latum mandatum tuum nimis.

MEM. O how have I loved thy law, O Lord! it is my meditation all the day.

My delight, Lord, is in thy bidding; ever my thoughts return to it.

Mem Quomodo dilexi legem tuam, Domine! tota die meditatio mea est.

Through thy commandment, thou hast made me wiser than my enemies: for it is ever with me.

Musing still on thy commandments, I have grown more prudent than my enemies.

I have understood more than all my teachers: because thy testimonies are my meditation.

More wisdom have I than all my teachers, so well have I pondered thy decrees.

I have had understanding above ancients: because I have sought thy commandments.

More learning have I than my elders, I that hold true to thy charge.

Super senes intellexi, quia mandata tua quæsivi.

I have restrained my feet from every evil way: that I may keep thy words.

Mindful of thy warnings, I guide my steps clear of every evil path.

Ab omni via mala prohibui pedes meos, ut custodiam verba tua.

I have not declined from thy judgments, because thou hast set me a law.

Meek under thy tuition, thy will I keep ever in view.

A judiciis tuis non declinavi, quia tu legem posuisti mihi.

How sweet are thy words to my palate! more than honey to my mouth.

Meat most appetizing are thy promises; never was honey so sweet to my taste.

Quam dulcia faucibus meis eloquia tua! super mel ori meo.

By thy commandments I have had understanding: therefore have I hated every way of iniquity.

Made wise by thy law, I shun every path of evil-doing.

A mandatis tuis intellexi; propterea odivi omnem viam iniquitatis.

NUN. Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my paths.

No lamp like thy word to guide my feet, to shew light on my path.

Nun Lucerna pedibus meis verbum tuum, et lumen semitis meis.

I have sworn and am determined to keep the judgments of thy justice.

Never will I retract my oath to give thy just commands observance.

Juravi et statui custodire judicia justitiæ tuæ.

I have been humbled, O Lord, exceedingly: quicken thou me according to thy word.

Nothing, Lord, but affliction, never the saving help thou didst promise me?

Humiliatus sum usquequaque, Domine; vivifica me secundum verbum tuum.

The free offerings of my mouth make acceptable, O Lord: and teach me thy judgments.

Nay, Lord, accept these vows of mine; teach me to do thy bidding.

Voluntaria oris mei beneplacita fac, Domine, et judicia tua doce me.

My soul is continually in my hands: and I have not forgotten thy law.

Needs must I carry my life in my hands, yet am I ever mindful of thy law.

Anima mea in manibus meis semper, et legem tuam non sum oblitus.

Sinners have laid a snare for me: but I have not erred from thy precepts.

Nearly the snares of the wicked caught my feet, yet would I not swerve from thy obedience.

Posuerunt peccatores laqueum mihi, et de mandatis tuis non erravi.

I have purchased thy testimonies for an inheritance for ever: because they are the joy of my heart.

Now and ever thy covenant is my prize, is my heart’s comfort.

Hæreditate acquisivi testimonia tua in æternum, quia exsultatio cordis mei sunt.

I have inclined my heart to do thy justifications for ever, for the reward.

Now and ever to do thy will perfectly is my heart’s aim.

Inclinavi cor meum ad faciendas justificationes tuas in æternum, propter retributionem.

SAMECH. I have hated the unjust: and have loved thy law.

Out upon the men that play traitor to the law I love!

Samech Iniquos odio habui, et legem tuam dilexi.

Thou art my helper and my protector: and in thy word I have greatly hoped.

Other defence, other shield have I none; in thy law I trust.

Adjutor et susceptor meus es tu, et in verbum tuum supersperavi.

Depart from me, ye malignant: and I will search the commandments of my God.

Out of my path, lovers of wrong; I will keep my God’s commandments.

Declinate a me, maligni, et scrutabor mandata Dei mei.

Uphold me according to thy word, and I shall live: and let me not be confounded in my expectation.

Thou hast despised all them that fall off from thy judgments; for their thought is unjust.

Obey thee who will not, shall earn thy disdain; idle is all their scheming.

Sprevisti omnes discedentes a judiciis tuis, quia injusta cogitatio eorum.

I have accounted all the sinners of the earth prevaricators: therefore have I loved thy testimonies.

Outcasts they are that profane the land with wrong; for me, thy law is enough.

Prævaricantes reputavi omnes peccatores terræ; ideo dilexi testimonia tua.

Pierce thou my flesh with thy fear: for I am afraid of thy judgments.

Overcome is my whole being with the fear of thee; I am adread of thy judgements.

Confige timore tuo carnes meas; a judiciis enim tuis timui.

AIN. I have done judgment and justice: give me not up to them that slander me.

Protect the justice of my cause; never leave me at the mercy of my oppressors.

Uphold thy servant unto good: let not the proud calumniate me.

Pledge thyself still to befriend me; save me from the oppression of my enemies.

My eyes have fainted after thy salvation: and for the word of thy justice.

Pining away, I look for thy saving help, the faithful keeping of thy promises.

Oculi mei defecerunt in salutare tuum, et in eloquium justitiæ tuæ.

Deal with thy servant according to thy mercy: and teach me thy justifications.

Pity thy own servant, and teach him thy decrees.

Fac cum servo tuo secundum misericordiam tuam, et justificationes tuas doce me.

I am thy servant: give me understanding that I may know thy testimonies.

Perfect in thy own servant’s heart the knowledge of thy will.

Servus tuus sum ego: da mihi intellectum, ut sciam testimonia tua.

It is time, O Lord, to do: they have dissipated thy law.

Put off the hour, Lord, no more; too long thy commandment stands defied.

Tempus faciendi, Domine: dissipaverunt legem tuam.

Therefore have I loved thy commandments above gold and the topaz.

Precious beyond gold or jewel I hold thy law.

Ideo dilexi mandata tua super aurum et topazion.

Therefore was I directed to all thy commandments: I have hated all wicked ways.

Prized be every decree of thine; forsworn be every path of evil-doing.

The declaration of thy words giveth light: and giveth understanding to little ones.

Revelation and light thy words disclose to the simple.

Declaratio sermonum tuorum illuminat, et intellectum dat parvulis.

I opened my mouth, and panted: because I longed for thy commandments.

Rises ever a sigh from my lips as I long after thy covenant.

Os meum aperui, et attraxi spiritum: quia mandata tua desiderabam.

Look thou upon me, and have mercy on me, according to the judgment of them that love thy name.

Regard and pity me, as thou hast pity for all that love thy name.

Aspice in me, et miserere mei, secundum judicium diligentium nomen tuum.

Direct my steps according to thy word: and let no iniquity have dominion over me.

Rule thou my path as thou hast promised; never be wrong-doing my master.

Gressus meos dirige secundum eloquium tuum, et non dominetur mei omnis injustitia.

Redeem me from the calumnies of men: that I may keep thy commandments.

Rescue me from man’s oppression, to wait henceforth on thy bidding.

Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: and teach me thy justifications.

Restore to thy servant the smile of thy living favour, and teach him to know thy will.

My eyes have sent forth springs of water: because they have not kept thy law.

Rivers of tears flow from my eyes, to see thy law forgotten.

SADE. Thou art just, O Lord: and thy judgment is right.

So just, Lord, thou art, thy awards so truly given!

Thou hast commanded justice thy testimonies: and thy truth exceedingly.

Strict justice and utter faithfulness inspire all thy decrees.

Mandasti justitiam testimonia tua, et veritatem tuam nimis.

My zeal hath made me pine away: because my enemies forgot thy words.

Stung by love’s jealousy, I watch my enemies defy thy bidding.

Tabescere me fecit zelus meus, quia obliti sunt verba tua inimici mei.

Thy word is exceedingly refined: and thy servant hath loved it.

Shall not I, thy servant, love thy promises, tested and found true?

Ignitum eloquium tuum vehementer, et servus tuus dilexit illud.

I am very young and despised; but I forget not thy justifications.

Still despised and disinherited, I do not forget thy charge.

Adolescentulus sum ego et contemptus; justificationes tuas non sum oblitus.

Thy justice is justice for ever: and thy law is the truth.

Trouble and anguish have found me: thy commandments are my meditation.

Twilight comes, and I awake to plead with thee, hoping ever in thy promises.

Through the night my eyes keep watch, to ponder thy sayings.

Hear thou my voice, O Lord, according to thy mercy: and quicken me according to thy judgment.

They that persecute me have drawn nigh to iniquity; but they are gone far off from thy law.

Treacherous foes draw near, that are strangers to thy covenant.

Appropinquaverunt persequentes me iniquitati: a lege autem tua longe facti sunt.

Thou art near, O Lord: and all thy ways are truth.

Thou, Lord, art close at hand; all thy awards are true.

I have known from the beginning concerning thy testimonies: that thou hast founded them for ever.

Taught long since by thy decrees, I know well thou hast ordained them everlastingly.

Unhappy I, that watch thy warnings to the sinner go unheeded!

Behold I have loved thy commandments, O Lord; quicken me thou in thy mercy.

Up, Lord, and witness the love I bear thy covenant; in thy mercy bid me live!

Vide quoniam mandata tua dilexi, Domine: in misericordia tua vivifica me.

The beginning of thy words is truth: all the judgments of thy justice are for ever.

Unchanging truth is thy word’s fountain-head, eternal the force of thy just decrees.

Principium verborum tuorum veritas; in æternum omnia judicia justitiæ tuæ.

SIN. Princes have persecuted me without cause: and my heart hath been in awe of thy words.

Vexed by the causeless malice of princes, my heart still dreads thy warnings.

Sin Principes persecuti sunt me gratis, et a verbis tuis formidavit cor meum.

I will rejoice at thy words, as one that hath found great spoil.

Victors rejoice not more over rich spoils, than I in thy promises.

Lætabor ego super eloquia tua, sicut qui invenit spolia multa.

I have hated and abhorred iniquity; but I have loved thy law.

Villainy I abhor and renounce; thy law is all my love.

Much peace have they that love thy law, and to them there is no stumbling-block.

Let my request come in before thee; deliver thou me according to thy word.

Wilt thou not countenance my plea, redeem thy pledge to deliver me?

My lips shall utter a hymn, when thou shalt teach me thy justifications.

What praise shall burst from my lips, when thou makest known thy will!

Eructabunt labia mea hymnum, cum docueris me justificationes tuas.

My tongue shall pronounce thy word: because all thy commandments are justice.

What hymns of thankfulness this tongue shall raise to the author of all just decrees!

Pronuntiabit lingua mea eloquium tuum, quia omnia mandata tua æquitas.

Let thy hand be with me to save me; for I have chosen thy precepts.

Wouldst thou but lift thy hand to aid me, that take my stand on thy covenant!

Fiat manus tua ut salvet me, quoniam mandata tua elegi.

I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my meditation.

Weary it is, Lord, waiting for deliverance, but thy law is my comfort.

Concupivi salutare tuum, Domine, et lex tua meditatio mea est.

My soul shall live and shall praise thee: and thy judgments shall help me.

When will thy just award grant redress, that I may live to praise thee?

Vivet anima mea, et laudabit te, et judicia tua adjuvabunt me.

I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost: seek thy servant, because I have not forgotten thy commandments.

Wayward thou seest me, like a lost sheep; come to look for thy servant, that is mindful still of thy bidding.

Erravi sicut ovis quæ periit: quære servum tuum, quia mandata tua non sum oblitus.
