1 Alleluja, Aggæi et Zachariæ. |
1 Alleluia, of Aggeus and Zacharias. |
1 (Alleluia.) |
2 Lauda, anima mea, Dominum. Laudabo Dominum in vita mea; psallam Deo meo quamdiu fuero. Nolite confidere in principibus, |
2 Praise the Lord, O my soul, in my life I will praise the Lord: I will sing to my God as long as I shall be. Put not your trust in princes: |
2 Praise the Lord, my soul; while life lasts, I will praise the Lord; of him, my God, shall my songs be while I am here to sing them. Do not put your trust in princes; |
3 in filiis hominum, in quibus non est salus. |
3 in the children of men, in whom there is no salvation. |
3 they are but men, they have no power to save. |
4 Exibit spiritus ejus, et revertetur in terram suam; in illa die peribunt omnes cogitationes eorum. |
4 His spirit shall go forth, and he shall return into his earth: in that day all their thoughts shall perish. |
4 As soon as the breath leaves his body, man goes back to the dust he belongs to; with that, all his designs will come to nothing. |
5 Beatus cujus Deus Jacob adjutor ejus, spes ejus in Domino Deo ipsius: |
5 Blessed is he who hath the God of Jacob for his helper, whose hope is in the Lord his God: |
5 Happier the man who turns to the God of Jacob for help, puts no confidence but in the Lord his God, |
6 qui fecit cælum et terram, mare, et omnia quæ in eis sunt. |
6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them. |
6 maker of heaven and earth and sea and all they contain; |
7 Qui custodit veritatem in sæculum; facit judicium injuriam patientibus; dat escam esurientibus. Dominus solvit compeditos; |
7 Who keepeth truth for ever: who executeth judgment for them that suffer wrong: who giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth them that are fettered: |
7 the God who keeps faith for ever, who redresses wrong, and gives food to the hungry. The Lord, who brings release to the prisoner, |
8 Dominus illuminat cæcos. Dominus erigit elisos; Dominus diligit justos. |
8 the Lord enlighteneth the blind. The Lord lifteth up them that are cast down: the Lord loveth the just. |
8 the Lord, who gives sight to the blind, the Lord, who comforts the burdened, the Lord, who befriends the innocent! |
9 Dominus custodit advenas, pupillum et viduam suscipiet, et vias peccatorum disperdet. |
9 The Lord keepeth the strangers, he will support the fatherless and the widow: and the ways of sinners he will destroy. |
9 The Lord, who protects the stranger, who defends orphan and widow, who overturns the counsel of the wicked! |
10 Regnabit Dominus in sæcula; Deus tuus, Sion, in generationem et generationem. |
10 The Lord shall reign for ever: thy God, O Sion, unto generation and generation. |
10 The Lord, reigning for ever, thy God, Sion, reigning from age to age! Alleluia. |
