1 Canticum Psalmi, ipsi David. |
1 A canticle of a psalm for David himself. |
1 (A song. A psalm. Of David.) |
2 Paratum cor meum, Deus, paratum cor meum; cantabo, et psallam in gloria mea. |
2 My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready: I will sing, and will give praise, with my glory. |
2 A true heart, my God, a heart true to thy service; I will sing of thee and praise thee. |
3 Exsurge, gloria mea; exsurge, psalterium et cithara; exsurgam diluculo. |
3 Arise, my glory; arise, psaltery and harp: I will arise in the morning early. |
3 Wake, my heart, wake, echoes of harp and viol; dawn shall find me watching. |
4 Confitebor tibi in populis, Domine, et psallam tibi in nationibus: |
4 I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing unto thee among the nations. |
4 Let me give thanks, Lord, for all the world to hear it, sing psalms while the Gentiles listen, |
5 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth even unto the clouds. |
5 of thy mercy, high above heaven itself, of thy faithfulness, that reaches the clouds! |
6 Exaltare super cælos, Deus, et super omnem terram gloria tua: |
6 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens, and thy glory over all the earth: |
6 O God, mount high above the heavens till thy glory overshadows the whole earth. |
7 ut liberentur dilecti tui. Salvum fac dextera tua, et exaudi me. |
7 that thy beloved may be delivered. Save with thy right hand and hear me. |
7 Now bring aid to the men thou lovest, give our prayer answer, and lift thy right hand to save. |
8 God hath spoken in his holiness. I will rejoice, and I will divide Sichem and I will mete out the vale of tabernacles. |
8 God’s word came to us from his sanctuary: In triumph I will divide up Sichem, and parcel out the valley of Tents; |
Juda rex meus; |
9 Galaad is mine: and Manasses is mine: and Ephraim the protection of my head. Juda is my king: |
9 to me Galaad, to me Manasses belongs; Ephraim is my helmet, Juda the staff I bear. |
10 Moab lebes spei meæ: in Idumæam extendam calceamentum meum; mihi alienigenæ amici facti sunt. |
10 Moab the pot of my hope. Over Edom I will stretch out my shoe: the aliens are become my friends. |
10 Now Moab, too, shall be my drudge; over Edom I will claim my right; I will lead the Philistines away in triumph. |
11 Quis deducet me in civitatem munitam? quis deducet me usque in Idumæam? |
11 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? |
11 Such was the oracle; but now who is to lead me on my march against this fortress, who is to find an entrance for me into Edom, |
12 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our armies? |
12 when thou, O God, hast disowned us, and wilt not go into battle with our armies? |
13 O grant us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. |
13 It is thou that must deliver us from peril; vain is the help of man. |
14 Through God we shall do mightily: and he will bring our enemies to nothing. |
14 Only through God can we fight victoriously; only he can trample our oppressors in the dust. |
