Alleluja.
Alleluia.
1
1
Praise the Lord, and call upon his name; tell the story of his doings for all the nations to hear;
1
Give glory to the Lord, and call upon his name: declare his deeds among the Gentiles.
2
2
greet him with song and psalm, recount his acts of miracle.
2
Sing to him, yea sing praises to him: relate all his wondrous works.
3
Laudamini in nomine sancto ejus; lætetur cor quærentium Dominum.
3
Triumph in that holy name; let every heart that longs for the Lord rejoice.
3
Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.
4
Quærite Dominum, et confirmamini; quærite faciem ejus semper.
4
On the Lord, on the Lord’s greatness still let your hearts dwell, on the Lord’s presence be your hearts set.
4
Seek ye the Lord, and be strengthened: seek his face evermore.
5
Mementote mirabilium ejus quæ fecit; prodigia ejus, et judicia oris ejus:
5
Remember the marvellous acts he did, his miracles, his sentences of doom;
5
Remember his marvellous works which he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth.
6
semen Abraham servi ejus; filii Jacob electi ejus.
6
are you not the posterity of Abraham, his own servant, sons of that Jacob on whom his choice fell?
6
O ye seed of Abraham his servant; ye sons of Jacob his chosen.
7
Ipse Dominus Deus noster; in universa terra judicia ejus.
7
And he, the Lord, is our own God, wide though his writ runs through all the world.
7
He is the Lord our God: his judgments are in all the earth.
8
Memor fuit in sæculum testamenti sui; verbi quod mandavit in mille generationes:
8
He keeps in everlasting memory that covenant of his, that promise which a thousand ages might not cancel.
8
He hath remembered his covenant for ever: the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.
9
9
He gave Abraham a promise, bound himself to Isaac by an oath;
9
Which he made to Abraham; and his oath to Isaac:
10
et statuit illud Jacob in præceptum, et Israël in testamentum æternum,
10
by that law Jacob should live, his Israel, bound to him with an eternal covenant.
10
And he appointed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting testament:
11
dicens: Tibi dabo terram Chanaan, funiculum hæreditatis vestræ:
11
To thee, he said, I will give the land of Chanaan, a portion allotted to thee and thine.
11
Saying: To thee will I give the land of Chanaan, the lot of your inheritance.
12
12
So few they were in number, only a handful, living there as strangers!
12
When they were but a small number: yea very few, and sojourners therein:
13
13
And ever they passed on from country to country, the guests of king or people;
13
And they passed from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people.
14
14
but he suffered none to harm them; to kings themselves the warning came;
14
He suffered no man to hurt them: and he reproved kings for their sakes.
15
Nolite tangere christos meos, et in prophetis meis nolite malignari.
15
Lay no hand on them, never hurt them, servants anointed and true spokesmen of mine.
15
Touch ye not my anointed: and do no evil to my prophets.
16
Et vocavit famem super terram, et omne firmamentum panis contrivit.
16
And now he brought famine on the land, cutting off all their supply of bread.
16
And he called a famine upon the land: and he broke in pieces all the support of bread.
17
Misit ante eos virum: in servum venumdatus est, Joseph.
17
But he had sent an envoy to prepare the way for them, that very Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
17
He sent a man before them: Joseph, who was sold for a slave.
18
Humiliaverunt in compedibus pedes ejus; ferrum pertransiit animam ejus:
18
Fetters held his feet, the yoke galled his neck,
18
They humbled his feet in fetters: the iron pierced his soul,
19
donec veniret verbum ejus. Eloquium Domini inflammavit eum.
19
but he proved a true prophet at last, the Lord’s accomplished word to vindicate him.
19
until his word came. The word of the Lord inflamed him.
20
Misit rex, et solvit eum; princeps populorum, et dimisit eum.
20
Then the king sent to release him; the proud ruler of many peoples set him free,
20
The king sent, and he released him: the ruler of the people, and he set him at liberty.
21
Constituit eum dominum domus suæ, et principem omnis possessionis suæ:
21
and appointed him master of his household, lord of all the possessions that were his.
21
He made him master of his house, and ruler of all his possession.
22
22
Joseph should teach his courtiers to be as Joseph was, should train his aged counsellors in wisdom.
22
That he might instruct his princes as himself, and teach his ancients wisdom.
23
Et intravit Israël in Ægyptum, et Jacob accola fuit in terra Cham.
23
So it was that Israel came into Egypt, that Jacob dwelt as an alien in the country of Cham.
23
And Israel went into Egypt: and Jacob was a sojourner in the land of Cham.
24
Et auxit populum suum vehementer, et firmavit eum super inimicos ejus.
24
Time passed, and he gave his people great increase of numbers, till it outmatched its rivals.
24
And he increased his people exceedingly: and strengthened them over their enemies.
25
25
And in these he wrought a change of heart; they grew weary of his people’s presence, devised ruin for his worshippers.
25
He turned their heart to hate his people: and to deal deceitfully with his servants.
26
Misit Moysen servum suum; Aaron quem elegit ipsum.
26
And now he sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, the man of his choice,
26
He sent Moses his servant: Aaron the man whom he had chosen.
27
Posuit in eis verba signorum suorum, et prodigiorum in terra Cham.
27
to bring about those signs, those miracles of his which the country of Cham would witness.
27
He gave them power to shew his signs, and his wonders in the land of Cham.
28
28
Dark night he sent to benight them, and still his warnings went unheeded.
28
He sent darkness, and made it obscure: and grieved not his words.
29
Convertit aquas eorum in sanguinem, et occidit pisces eorum.
29
He turned their supply of water into blood, killing all the fish;
29
He turned their waters into blood, and destroyed their fish.
30
Edidit terra eorum ranas in penetralibus regum ipsorum.
30
frogs swarmed out of the ground, even in their royal palaces;
30
Their land brought forth frogs, in the inner chambers of their kings.
31
Dixit, et venit cœnomyia et ciniphes in omnibus finibus eorum.
31
at his word, flies attacked them, and gnats all their land over;
31
He spoke, and there came divers sorts of flies and sciniphs in all their coasts.
32
Posuit pluvias eorum grandinem: ignem comburentem in terra ipsorum.
32
hail was the rain he gave them, and it brought fire that burned up their countryside;
32
He gave them hail for rain, a burning fire in the land.
33
Et percussit vineas eorum, et ficulneas eorum, et contrivit lignum finium eorum.
33
he shattered their vines and fig-trees, broke down all the wood that grew in their domains.
33
And he destroyed their vineyards and their fig trees: and he broke in pieces the trees of their coasts.
34
34
He gave the word, and locusts came, grasshoppers, too, past all numbering,
34
He spoke, and the locust came, and the bruchus, of which there was no number.
35
et comedit omne fœnum in terra eorum, et comedit omnem fructum terræ eorum.
35
eating up all the grass they had, eating up all the crops their land yielded.
35
And they devoured all the grass in their land, and consumed all the fruit of their ground.
36
Et percussit omne primogenitum in terra eorum, primitias omnis laboris eorum.
36
Then, his hand fell upon Egypt’s first-born, on the first-fruits of all they had engendered;
36
And he slew all the firstborn in their land: the firstfruits of all their labour.
37
37
and so he brought his people out, enriched with silver and gold, no foot that stumbled among all their tribes.
37
And he brought them out with silver and gold: and there was not among their tribes one that was feeble.
38
Lætata est Ægyptus in profectione eorum, quia incubuit timor eorum super eos.
38
Glad indeed was Egypt at their going, such fear of them had overtaken it.
38
Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them lay upon them.
39
39
He spread out a cloud to cover them, that turned to fire in the darkness, lighting their journey.
39
He spread a cloud for their protection, and fire to give them light in the night.
40
Petierunt, et venit coturnix, et pane cæli saturavit eos.
40
Quails came, when they asked for food; he satisfied their desire, too, with bread from heaven,
40
They asked, and the quail came: and he filled them with the bread of heaven.
41
Dirupit petram, et fluxerunt aquæ: abierunt in sicco flumina.
41
and pierced the rock so that water flowed down, running streams in the wilderness.
41
He opened the rock, and waters flowed: rivers ran down in the dry land.
42
42
So well did he remember that holy promise of his, made to his servant Abraham;
42
Because he remembered his holy word, which he had spoken to his servant Abraham.
43
Et eduxit populum suum in exsultatione, et electos suos in lætitia.
43
in joy and triumph he led them out, his chosen people,
43
And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness.
44
Et dedit illis regiones gentium, et labores populorum possederunt:
44
and gave them the lands of the heathen for their own.
44
And he gave them the lands of the Gentiles: and they possessed the labours of the people:
45
45
There, on soil Gentile hands had tilled, his commandments should be kept sacred, his law should reign. Alleluia.
45
That they might observe his justifications, and seek after his law.
