1
In finem. Psalmus David, canticum Jeremiæ et Ezechielis populo transmigrationis, cum inciperent exire.
1
To the end, a psalm of David. The canticle of Jeremias and Ezechiel to the people of the captivity, when they began to go out.
1
(To the choir-master. A psalm. Of David. A song.)
2
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem.
2
A hymn, O God, becometh thee in Sion: and a vow shall be paid to thee in Jerusalem.
2
O God, thou shalt yet have praise in Sion; to thee let the vow be paid,
3
Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet.
3
O hear my prayer: all flesh shall come to thee.
3
hearer of prayer. To thee all mankind must look for pardon,
4
Verba iniquorum prævaluerunt super nos, et impietatibus nostris tu propitiaberis.
4
The words of the wicked have prevailed over us: and thou wilt pardon our transgressions.
4
weighed down by its sinfulness till thou dost forgive.
5
Beatus quem elegisti et assumpsisti: inhabitabit in atriis tuis. Replebimur in bonis domus tuæ; sanctum est templum tuum,
5
Blessed is he whom thou hast chosen and taken to thee: he shall dwell in thy courts. We shall be filled with the good things of thy house; holy is thy temple,
5
Blessed the man on whom thy choice falls, whom thou takest to dwell with thee in thy own domain! Fill these hearts with love of thy house, with awe of thy holy temple.
6
mirabile in æquitate. Exaudi nos, Deus, salutaris noster, spes omnium finium terræ, et in mari longe.
6
wonderful in justice. Hear us, O God our saviour, who art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and in the sea afar off.
6
Wonderful the miracles thou shewest when in mercy thou dost hear us, O God our Saviour; at the bounds of earth, far over the seas, in thee we hope.
7
Præparans montes in virtute tua, accinctus potentia;
7
Thou who preparest the mountains by thy strength, being girded with power:
7
What power girds thee about! In thy strength the mountains stand firm;
8
qui conturbas profundum maris, sonum fluctuum ejus. Turbabuntur gentes,
8
who troublest the depth of the sea, the noise of its waves. The Gentiles shall be troubled,
8
thou dost calm the raging of the sea, raging sea-billows, ay, and the turmoil of angry nations.
9
et timebunt qui habitant terminos a signis tuis; exitus matutini et vespere delectabis.
9
and they that dwell in the uttermost borders shall be afraid at thy signs: thou shalt make the outgoings of the morning and of the evening to be joyful.
9
Thy portents strike terror at the world’s end, fill the lands of sunrise and sunset with rejoicing.
10
Visitasti terram, et inebriasti eam; multiplicasti locupletare eam. Flumen Dei repletum est aquis; parasti cibum illorum: quoniam ita est præparatio ejus.
10
Thou hast visited the earth, and hast plentifully watered it; thou hast many ways enriched it. The river of God is filled with water, thou hast prepared their food: for so is its preparation.
10
And now thou hast brought relief to this land of ours, hast watered and greatly enriched it; deep flows the channel whence thy divine providence grants us food; long time thou dost prepare it,
11
Rivos ejus inebria; multiplica genimina ejus: in stillicidiis ejus lætabitur germinans.
11
Fill up plentifully the streams thereof, multiply its fruits; it shall spring up and rejoice in its showers.
11
watering the furrow, loosening the clods, multiplying, with soft showers, the grain.
12
Benedices coronæ anni benignitatis tuæ, et campi tui replebuntur ubertate.
12
Thou shalt bless the crown of the year of thy goodness: and thy fields shall be filled with plenty.
12
Thy bounty it is that crowns the year; where thy feet have passed, the stream of plenty flows;
13
Pinguescent speciosa deserti, et exsultatione colles accingentur.
13
The beautiful places of the wilderness shall grow fat: and the hills shall be girded about with joy,
13
flows through the desert pastures, till all the hill-sides are gaily clad,
14
Induti sunt arietes ovium, et valles abundabunt frumento; clamabunt, etenim hymnum dicent.
14
The rams of the flock are clothed, and the vales shall abound with corn: they shall shout, yea they shall sing a hymn.
14
herds throng the fields, and the valleys stand deep in corn; the shout of joy everywhere, everywhere the hymn of praise.
