1 Filiis Core. Psalmus cantici. Fundamenta ejus in montibus sanctis; | 1 For the sons of Core, a psalm of a canticle. The foundations thereof are in the holy mountains: | 1 (Of the sons of Core. A psalm. A song.) His own building amidst the inviolate hills, |
2 diligit Dominus portas Sion super omnia tabernacula Jacob. | 2 The Lord loveth the gates of Sion above all the tabernacles of Jacob. | 2 dearer to the Lord are Sion walls than any other home in Israel. |
3 Gloriosa dicta sunt de te, civitas Dei! | 3 Glorious things are said of thee, O city of God. | 3 How high a boast, city of God, is made for thee, |
4 Memor ero Rahab et Babylonis, scientium me; ecce alienigenæ, et Tyrus, et populus Æthiopum, hi fuerunt illic. | 4 I will be mindful of Rahab and of Babylon knowing me. Behold the foreigners, and Tyre, and the people of the Ethiopians, these were there. | 4 Mine it is to reckon the folk of Egypt, of Babylon, too, among my citizens! Philistines, Tyrians, Ethiopians, all must claim Sion as their birthplace; |
5 Numquid Sion dicet: Homo et homo natus est in ea, et ipse fundavit eam Altissimus? | 5 Shall not Sion say: This man and that man is born in her? and the Highest himself hath founded her. | 5 None was ever born, the proverb shall run, that did not take his birth from her; it was the most High, none other, that founded her. |
6 Dominus narrabit in scripturis populorum et principum, horum qui fuerunt in ea. | 6 The Lord shall tell in his writings of peoples and of princes, of them that have been in her. | 6 This was their birthplace, the Lord shall write over the muster-roll of the nations; |
7 Sicut lætantium omnium habitatio est in te. | 7 The dwelling in thee is as it were of all rejoicing. | 7 nor any but shall tell her praises with song and dance, each claiming from her its only origin. |
