In finem. In hymnis David. | 1 Unto the end, in hymns, for David. | 1 (To the choir-master. For stringed instruments. Of David.) |
Exaudi, Deus, deprecationem meam; intende orationi meæ. | 2 Hear, O God, my supplication: be attentive to my prayer. | 2 Listen, Lord, to this cry of appeal; do not let my prayer go unheeded, |
A finibus terræ ad te clamavi, dum anxiaretur cor meum; in petra exaltasti me. Deduxisti me, | 3 To thee have I cried from the ends of the earth: when my heart was in anguish, thou hast exalted me on a rock. Thou hast conducted me; | 3 though it be from the ends of the earth that I call upon thee. When my heart misgives me, thou wilt set me high up on a rock, thou wilt bring me repose; |
quia factus es spes mea: turris fortitudinis a facie inimici. | 4 for thou hast been my hope; a tower of strength against the face of the enemy. | 4 thou, my only hope, my strong tower against the assault of my enemies. |
Inhabitabo in tabernaculo tuo in sæcula; protegar in velamento alarum tuarum. | 5 In thy tabernacle I shall dwell for ever: I shall be protected under the covert of thy wings. | 5 Oh let me dwell for ever in thy tabernacle, let me take refuge under the shelter of thy wings! |
Quoniam tu, Deus meus, exaudisti orationem meam; dedisti hæreditatem timentibus nomen tuum. | 6 For thou, my God, hast heard my prayer: thou hast given an inheritance to them that fear thy name. | 6 Lord, thou hast listened to my prayer, a domain thou hast given me where thy name is held in awe. |
Dies super dies regis adjicies; annos ejus usque in diem generationis et generationis. | 7 Thou wilt add days to the days of the king: his years even to generation and generation. | 7 Year upon year do thou add to the king’s reign; while generations come and go, may his life still last. |
Permanet in æternum in conspectu Dei: misericordiam et veritatem ejus quis requiret? | 8 He abideth for ever in the sight of God: his mercy and truth who shall search? | 8 For ever may he reign under God’s favour; let mercy and faithfulness be his escort. |
Sic psalmum dicam nomini tuo in sæculum sæculi, ut reddam vota mea de die in diem. | 9 So will I sing a psalm to thy name for ever and ever: that I may pay my vows from day to day. | 9 Eternally I will sing thy praises, day after day perform my vows. |
