1
Laus cantici David.
Qui habitat in adjutorio Altissimi, in protectione Dei cæli commorabitur.
1
The praise of a canticle for David.
He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob.
1
Content if thou be to live with the most High for thy defence, under his Almighty shadow abiding still,
2
Dicet Domino: Susceptor meus es tu, et refugium meum; Deus meus, sperabo in eum.
2
He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge: my God, in him will I trust.
2
him thy refuge, him thy stronghold thou mayst call, thy own God, in whom is all thy trust.
3
Quoniam ipse liberavit me de laqueo venantium, et a verbo aspero.
3
For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word.
3
He it is will rescue thee from every treacherous lure, every destroying plague.
4
Scapulis suis obumbrabit tibi, et sub pennis ejus sperabis.
4
He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust.
4
His wings for refuge, nestle thou shalt under his care,
5
Scuto circumdabit te veritas ejus: non timebis a timore nocturno;
5
His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.
5
his faithfulness thy watch and ward. Nothing shalt thou have to fear from nightly terrors,
6
a sagitta volante in die, a negotio perambulante in tenebris, ab incursu, et dæmonio meridiano.
6
Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil.
6
from the arrow that flies by day-light, from pestilence that walks to and fro in the darkness, from the death that wastes under the noon.
7
Cadent a latere tuo mille, et decem millia a dextris tuis; ad te autem non appropinquabit.
7
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee.
7
Though a thousand fall at thy side, ten thousand at thy right hand, it shall never come next or near thee;
8
Verumtamen oculis tuis considerabis, et retributionem peccatorum videbis.
8
But thou shalt consider with thy eyes: and shalt see the reward of the wicked.
8
rather, thy eyes shall look about thee, and see the reward of sinners.
9
Quoniam tu es, Domine, spes mea; Altissimum posuisti refugium tuum.
9
Because thou, O Lord, art my hope: thou hast made the most High thy refuge.
9
He, the Lord, is thy refuge; thou hast found a stronghold in the most High.
10
Non accedet ad te malum, et flagellum non appropinquabit tabernaculo tuo.
10
There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.
10
There is no harm that can befall thee, no plague that shall come near thy dwelling.
11
Quoniam angelis suis mandavit de te, ut custodiant te in omnibus viis tuis.
11
For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways.
11
He has given charge to his angels concerning thee, to watch over thee wheresoever thou goest;
12
In manibus portabunt te, ne forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum.
12
In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12
they will hold thee up with their hands lest thou shouldst chance to trip on a stone.
13
Super aspidem et basiliscum ambulabis, et conculcabis leonem et draconem.
13
Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon.
13
Thou shalt tread safely on asp and adder, crush lion and serpent under thy feet.
14
Quoniam in me speravit, liberabo eum; protegam eum, quoniam cognovit nomen meum.
14
Because he hoped in me I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known my name.
14
He trusts in me, mine it is to rescue him; he acknowledges my name, from me he shall have protection;
15
Clamabit ad me, et ego exaudiam eum; cum ipso sum in tribulatione: eripiam eum, et glorificabo eum.
15
He shall cry to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.
15
when he calls upon me, I will listen, in affliction I am at his side, to bring him safety and honour.
16
Longitudine dierum replebo eum, et ostendam illi salutare meum.
16
I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him my salvation.
16
Length of days he shall have to content him, and find in me deliverance.
