Unto the end, destroy not, for David for an inscription of a title, when Saul sent and watched his house to kill him. (1 Kings 19.)

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; and defend me from them that rise up against me.

Eripe me de inimicis meis, Deus meus, et ab insurgentibus in me libera me.

O God, deliver me from my enemies, rescue me from their assaults;

Deliver me from them that work iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

Eripe me de operantibus iniquitatem, et de viris sanguinum salva me.

thwart their treacherous designs, disappoint their lust for blood.

For behold they have caught my soul: the mighty have rushed in upon me:

Quia ecce ceperunt animam meam; irruerunt in me fortes.

See how they plot against my life, how strong is their confederacy!

Neither is it my iniquity, nor my sin, O Lord: without iniquity have I run, and directed my steps.

Neque iniquitas mea, neque peccatum meum, Domine; sine iniquitate cucurri, et direxi.

Yet never, Lord, through any fault or offence of mine; unprovoked, they rush to the attack.

Rise up thou to meet me, and behold: even thou, O Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel. Attend to visit all the nations: have no mercy on all them that work iniquity.

Exsurge in occursum meum, et vide: et tu, Domine Deus virtutum, Deus Israël, intende ad visitandas omnes gentes: non miserearis omnibus qui operantur iniquitatem.

Bestir thyself, come to my side and witness my wrongs. Lord of hosts, God of Israel, awake; a world chastise, and shew the treacherous no mercy.

They shall return at evening, and shall suffer hunger like dogs: and shall go round about the city.

Convertentur ad vesperam, et famem patientur ut canes: et circuibunt civitatem.

See how they come back at nightfall, like yelping dogs, to prowl about the city!

Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: for who, say they, hath heard us?

Ecce loquentur in ore suo, et gladius in labiis eorum: quoniam quis audivit?

Tongues that boast, lips that rail, as if none could hear them;

But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them: thou shalt bring all the nations to nothing.

Et tu, Domine, deridebis eos; ad nihilum deduces omnes gentes.

and all the while thou, Lord, makest light of them, thou, in whose esteem all the nations are as nothing.

I will keep my strength to thee: for thou art my protector:

Fortitudinem meam ad te custodiam, quia, Deus, susceptor meus es:

To thee I look, the God who strengthens me, the God who watches over me;

My God, his mercy shall prevent me.

Deus meus misericordia ejus præveniet me.

my God, and all my hope of mercy.With that divine aid, may I triumph over my enemies.

God shall let me see over my enemies: slay them not, lest at any time my people forget. Scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord, my protector:

Deus ostendet mihi super inimicos meos: ne occidas eos, nequando obliviscantur populi mei. Disperge illos in virtute tua, et depone eos, protector meus, Domine:

Smite them down, my God, before they compass the overthrow of my people; let that power of thine overawe and crush them, my protector, my Master!

For the sin of their mouth, and the word of their lips: and let them be taken in their pride. And for their cursing and lying they shall be talked of,

delictum oris eorum, sermonem labiorum ipsorum; et comprehendantur in superbia sua. Et de execratione et mendacio annuntiabuntur

Down with the guilty tongues, the boastful lips; let their own pride ensnare them, their cursing and their lies.

when they are consumed: when they are consumed by thy wrath, and they shall be no more. And they shall know that God will rule Jacob, and all the ends of the earth.

in consummatione: in ira consummationis, et non erunt. Et scient quia Deus dominabitur Jacob, et finium terræ.

Ruinous, ruinous be thy vengeance, overwhelming them; shew them that there is a God who rules over Jacob, rules over the utmost ends of the earth.

They shall return at evening and shall suffer hunger like dogs: and shall go round about the city.

Convertentur ad vesperam, et famem patientur ut canes: et circuibunt civitatem.

Back come they at nightfall, like yelping dogs, and prowl about the city;

They shall be scattered abroad to eat, and shall murmur if they be not filled.

Ipsi dispergentur ad manducandum; si vero non fuerint saturati, et murmurabunt.

far and wide they will roam in search of their prey, and snarl with rage when they go unfed at last.

But I will sing thy strength: and will extol thy mercy in the morning. For thou art become my support, and my refuge, in the day of my trouble.

Ego autem cantabo fortitudinem tuam, et exsultabo mane misericordiam tuam: quia factus es susceptor meus, et refugium meum in die tribulationis meæ.

And I, ere long, will be proclaiming thy greatness, will be triumphing in the mercy thou hast shewn me, thou, my stronghold and my refuge in my hour of peril.

Unto thee, O my helper, will I sing, for thou art God my defence: my God my mercy.

Adjutor meus, tibi psallam, quia Deus susceptor meus es; Deus meus, misericordia mea.

To thee I will sing, the God who strengthens me, the God who watches over me, my God, and all my hope of mercy.
