Unto the end, for them that shall be changed, for the inscription of a title, to David himself, for doctrine,

when he set fire to Mesopotamia of Syria and Sobal: and Joab returned and slew of Edom, in the vale of the saltpits, twelve thousand men.

cum succendit Mesopotamiam Syriæ et Sobal, et convertit Joab, et percussit Idumæam in valle Salinarum duodecim millia.

This was when he marched against the Syrians of Naharaim and Soba, and Joab on his way home defeated the men of Edom in the Valley of Salt, twelve thousand of them.)

O God, thou hast cast us off, and hast destroyed us; thou hast been angry, and hast had mercy on us.

Deus, repulisti nos, et destruxisti nos; iratus es, et misertus es nobis.

Too long, O God, hast thou disowned us, and scattered our armies in flight; thy wrath forgo, and bring us back to our own.
4
Thou hast moved the earth, and hast troubled it: heal thou the breaches thereof, for it has been moved.

Commovisti terram, et conturbasti eam; sana contritiones ejus, quia commota est.

Heal the wounds of the land thou hast shaken and torn asunder, the land that trembles still.
5
Thou hast shewn thy people hard things; thou hast made us drink the wine of sorrow.

Ostendisti populo tuo dura; potasti nos vino compunctionis.

Heavy the burden thou didst lay on us; such a draught thou didst brew for us as made our senses reel.

Thou hast given a warning to them that fear thee: that they may flee from before the bow: That thy beloved may be delivered.

Dedisti metuentibus te significationem, ut fugiant a facie arcus; ut liberentur dilecti tui.

But now thou hast set up a standard to rally thy faithful servants, and to protect them from the archers’ onset; now bring aid to the men thou lovest,

Save me with thy right hand, and hear me.

Salvum fac dextera tua, et exaudi me.

give our prayer answer, and lift thy right hand to save.

God hath spoken in his holy place: I will rejoice, and I will divide Sichem; and will mete out the vale of tabernacles.

Deus locutus est in sancto suo: lætabor, et partibor Sichimam; et convallem tabernaculorum metibor.

God’s word came to us from his sanctuary, In triumph I will divide up Sichem, and parcel out the valley of Tents;
9
Galaad is mine, and Manasses is mine: and Ephraim is the strength of my head. Juda is my king:

Meus est Galaad, et meus est Manasses; et Ephraim fortitudo capitis mei. Juda rex meus;

to me Galaad, to me Manasses belongs; Ephraim is my helmet, Juda the staff I bear.
10
Moab is the pot of my hope. Into Edom will I stretch out my shoe: to me the foreigners are made subject.

Moab olla spei meæ. In Idumæam extendam calceamentum meum: mihi alienigenæ subditi sunt.

Now Moab, too, shall be my drudge; over Edom I will claim my right; I will lead the Philistines away in triumph.

Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?

Quis deducet me in civitatem munitam? quis deducet me usque in Idumæam?

Such was the oracle; but now who is to lead me on my march against this fortress, who is to find an entrance for me into Edom,
12
Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go out with our armies?

nonne tu, Deus, qui repulisti nos? et non egredieris, Deus, in virtutibus nostris?

when thou, O God, hast disowned us, and wilt not go into battle with our armies?
13
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the salvation of man.

Da nobis auxilium de tribulatione, quia vana salus hominis.
13
It is thou that must deliver us from peril; vain is the help of man.
14
Through God we shall do mightily: and he shall bring to nothing them that afflict us.
14
In Deo faciemus virtutem; et ipse ad nihilum deducet tribulantes nos.
14
Only through God can we fight victoriously; only he can trample our oppressors in the dust.
