1 To the end, a psalm of David. The canticle of Jeremias and Ezechiel to the people of the captivity, when they began to go out. |
1 In finem. Psalmus David, canticum Jeremiæ et Ezechielis populo transmigrationis, cum inciperent exire. |
1 (To the choir-master. A psalm. Of David. A song.) |
2 A hymn, O God, becometh thee in Sion: and a vow shall be paid to thee in Jerusalem. |
2 Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. |
2 O God, thou shalt yet have praise in Sion; to thee let the vow be paid, |
3 O hear my prayer: all flesh shall come to thee. |
3 Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet. |
3 hearer of prayer. To thee all mankind must look for pardon, |
4 The words of the wicked have prevailed over us: and thou wilt pardon our transgressions. |
4 Verba iniquorum prævaluerunt super nos, et impietatibus nostris tu propitiaberis. |
4 weighed down by its sinfulness till thou dost forgive. |
5 Blessed is he whom thou hast chosen and taken to thee: he shall dwell in thy courts. We shall be filled with the good things of thy house; holy is thy temple, |
5 Beatus quem elegisti et assumpsisti: inhabitabit in atriis tuis. Replebimur in bonis domus tuæ; sanctum est templum tuum, |
5 Blessed the man on whom thy choice falls, whom thou takest to dwell with thee in thy own domain! Fill these hearts with love of thy house, with awe of thy holy temple. |
6 wonderful in justice. Hear us, O God our saviour, who art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and in the sea afar off. |
6 mirabile in æquitate. Exaudi nos, Deus, salutaris noster, spes omnium finium terræ, et in mari longe. |
6 Wonderful the miracles thou shewest when in mercy thou dost hear us, O God our Saviour; at the bounds of earth, far over the seas, in thee we hope. |
7 Thou who preparest the mountains by thy strength, being girded with power: |
7 Præparans montes in virtute tua, accinctus potentia; |
7 What power girds thee about! In thy strength the mountains stand firm; |
8 who troublest the depth of the sea, the noise of its waves. The Gentiles shall be troubled, |
8 qui conturbas profundum maris, sonum fluctuum ejus. Turbabuntur gentes, |
8 thou dost calm the raging of the sea, raging sea-billows, ay, and the turmoil of angry nations. |
9 and they that dwell in the uttermost borders shall be afraid at thy signs: thou shalt make the outgoings of the morning and of the evening to be joyful. |
9 et timebunt qui habitant terminos a signis tuis; exitus matutini et vespere delectabis. |
9 Thy portents strike terror at the world’s end, fill the lands of sunrise and sunset with rejoicing. |
10 Thou hast visited the earth, and hast plentifully watered it; thou hast many ways enriched it. The river of God is filled with water, thou hast prepared their food: for so is its preparation. |
10 Visitasti terram, et inebriasti eam; multiplicasti locupletare eam. Flumen Dei repletum est aquis; parasti cibum illorum: quoniam ita est præparatio ejus. |
10 And now thou hast brought relief to this land of ours, hast watered and greatly enriched it; deep flows the channel whence thy divine providence grants us food; long time thou dost prepare it, |
11 Fill up plentifully the streams thereof, multiply its fruits; it shall spring up and rejoice in its showers. |
11 Rivos ejus inebria; multiplica genimina ejus: in stillicidiis ejus lætabitur germinans. |
11 watering the furrow, loosening the clods, multiplying, with soft showers, the grain. |
12 Thou shalt bless the crown of the year of thy goodness: and thy fields shall be filled with plenty. |
12 Benedices coronæ anni benignitatis tuæ, et campi tui replebuntur ubertate. |
12 Thy bounty it is that crowns the year; where thy feet have passed, the stream of plenty flows; |
13 The beautiful places of the wilderness shall grow fat: and the hills shall be girded about with joy, |
13 Pinguescent speciosa deserti, et exsultatione colles accingentur. |
13 flows through the desert pastures, till all the hill-sides are gaily clad, |
14 The rams of the flock are clothed, and the vales shall abound with corn: they shall shout, yea they shall sing a hymn. |
14 Induti sunt arietes ovium, et valles abundabunt frumento; clamabunt, etenim hymnum dicent. |
14 herds throng the fields, and the valleys stand deep in corn; the shout of joy everywhere, everywhere the hymn of praise. |
