1 A canticle for David himself, when the house was built after the captivity. Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: sing to the Lord, all the earth. |
1 Canticum ipsi David, quando domus ædificabatur post captivitatem. Cantate Domino canticum novum; cantate Domino omnis terra. |
1 Sing the Lord a new song; in the Lord’s honour, let the whole earth make melody! |
2 Sing ye to the Lord and bless his name: shew forth his salvation from day to day. |
2 Cantate Domino, et benedicite nomini ejus; annuntiate de die in diem salutare ejus. |
2 Sing to the Lord, and bless his name; never cease to bear record of his power to save. |
3 Declare his glory among the Gentiles: his wonders among all people. |
3 Annuntiate inter gentes gloriam ejus; in omnibus populis mirabilia ejus. |
3 Publish his glory among the heathen; his wonderful acts for all the world to hear. |
4 For the Lord is great, and exceedingly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. |
4 Quoniam magnus Dominus, et laudabilis nimis: terribilis est super omnes deos. |
4 How great is the Lord, how worthy of honour! What other god is to be feared as he? |
5 For all the gods of the Gentiles are devils: but the Lord made the heavens. |
5 Quoniam omnes dii gentium dæmonia; Dominus autem cælos fecit. |
5 They are but fancied gods the heathen call divine; the Lord, not they, made the heavens. |
6 Praise and beauty are before him: holiness and majesty in his sanctuary. |
6 Confessio et pulchritudo in conspectu ejus; sanctimonia et magnificentia in sanctificatione ejus. |
6 Honour and beauty are his escort; worship and magnificence the attendants of his shrine. |
7 Bring ye to the Lord, O ye kindreds of the Gentiles, bring ye to the Lord glory and honour: |
7 Afferte Domino, patriæ gentium, afferte Domino gloriam et honorem; |
7 Tribes of the heathen, make your offering to the Lord, an offering to the Lord of glory and homage, |
8 bring to the Lord glory unto his name. Bring up sacrifices, and come into his courts: |
8 afferte Domino gloriam nomini ejus. Tollite hostias, et introite in atria ejus; |
8 an offering of glory to the Lord’s name; bring sacrifice, come into his courts, |
9 adore ye the Lord in his holy court. Let all the earth be moved at his presence. |
9 adorate Dominum in atrio sancto ejus. Commoveatur a facie ejus universa terra; |
9 worship the Lord in holy array. Before the Lord’s presence let the whole earth bow in reverence; |
10 Say ye among the Gentiles, the Lord hath reigned. For he hath corrected the world, which shall not be moved: he will judge the people with justice. |
10 dicite in gentibus, quia Dominus regnavit. Etenim correxit orbem terræ, qui non commovebitur; judicabit populos in æquitate. |
10 tell the heathen, The Lord is king now, he has put the world in order, never to be thrown into confusion more; he gives the nations a just award. |
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, let the sea be moved, and the fulness thereof: |
11 Lætentur cæli, et exsultet terra; commoveatur mare et plenitudo ejus; |
11 Rejoice, heaven, and let earth be glad; let the sea, and all the sea contains, give thunderous applause. |
12 the fields and all things that are in them shall be joyful. Then shall all the trees of the woods rejoice |
12 gaudebunt campi, et omnia quæ in eis sunt. Tunc exsultabunt omnia ligna silvarum |
12 The fields, and all the burden they bear, full of expectancy; no tree in the forest but will rejoice to greet its Lord’s coming. |
13 before the face of the Lord, because he cometh: because he cometh to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with justice, and the people with his truth. |
13 a facie Domini, quia venit, quoniam venit judicare terram. Judicabit orbem terræ in æquitate, et populos in veritate sua. |
13 He comes to rule the earth; brings the world justice, to every race of men its promised award. |
