when Doeg, the Edomite, came and told Saul, David went into Abimelech’s house.)

Why dost thou glory in malice, thou that art mighty in iniquity?

Quid gloriaris in malitia, qui potens es in iniquitate?

Wilt thou still take pride, infamous tyrant, in thy power to harm?

All the day long thy tongue hath devised injustice: as a sharp razor, thou hast wrought deceit.

Tota die injustitiam cogitavit lingua tua; sicut novacula acuta fecisti dolum.

Evermore thou settest thy heart on mischief; thy words are razor-edged, and thou a traitor.

Thou hast loved malice more than goodness: and iniquity rather than to speak righteousness.

Dilexisti malitiam super benignitatem; iniquitatem magis quam loqui æquitatem.

Cruelty, never kindness, is thy study, treason, never honest speech;

Thou hast loved all the words of ruin, O deceitful tongue.

Dilexisti omnia verba præcipitationis; lingua dolosa.

well thy false lips love the word that brings men to ruin.

Therefore will God destroy thee for ever: he will pluck thee out, and remove thee from thy dwelling place: and thy root out of the land of the living.

Propterea Deus destruet te in finem; evellet te, et emigrabit te de tabernaculo tuo, et radicem tuam de terra viventium.

And will not God destroy thee utterly, root thee up, drive thee from thy home, till thy stock is known among living men no more?

The just shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, and say:

Videbunt justi, et timebunt; et super eum ridebunt, et dicent:

Honest folk will watch, and wonder, and taunt him then;

Behold the man that made not God his helper: But trusted in the abundance of his riches: and prevailed in his vanity.

Ecce homo qui non posuit Deum adjutorem suum; sed speravit in multitudine divitiarum suarum, et prævaluit in vanitate sua.

So much for the man who would have none of God’s help, but relied on his store of riches, and found his strength in knavery?

But I, as a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, have hoped in the mercy of God for ever, yea for ever and ever.

Ego autem, sicut oliva fructifera in domo Dei; speravi in misericordia Dei, in æternum et in sæculum sæculi.

And I? rooted like a fruitful olive-tree in the house of my God, I will trust for ever in his divine mercy;

I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name, for it is good in the sight of thy saints.

Confitebor tibi in sæculum, quia fecisti; et exspectabo nomen tuum, quoniam bonum est in conspectu sanctorum tuorum.

I will give thee eternal thanks for all thou hast done, and boast, as men should ever boast, of thy name, the faithful for my company.
