1
Unto the end, for the morning protection, a psalm for David.
1
In finem, pro susceptione matutina. Psalmus David.
1
(To the choir-master. Melody, The hind at dawn. A psalm. Of David.)
2
O God my God, look upon me: why hast thou forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my sins.
2
Deus, Deus meus, respice in me: quare me dereliquisti? longe a salute mea verba delictorum meorum.
2
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Loudly I call, but my prayer cannot reach thee.
3
O my God, I shall cry by day, and thou wilt not hear: and by night, and it shall not be reputed as folly in me.
3
Deus meus, clamabo per diem, et non exaudies; et nocte, et non ad insipientiam mihi.
3
Thou dost not answer, my God, when I cry out to thee day and night, thou dost not heed.
4
But thou dwellest in the holy place, the praise of Israel.
4
Tu autem in sancto habitas, laus Israël.
4
Thou art there none the less, dwelling in the holy place; Israel’s ancient boast.
5
In thee have our fathers hoped: they have hoped, and thou hast delivered them.
5
In te speraverunt patres nostri; speraverunt, et liberasti eos.
5
It was in thee that our fathers trusted, and thou didst reward their trust by delivering them;
6
They cried to thee, and they were saved: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6
Ad te clamaverunt, et salvi facti sunt; in te speraverunt, et non sunt confusi.
6
they cried to thee, and rescue came; no need to be ashamed of such trust as theirs.
7
But I am a worm, and no man: the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people.
7
Ego autem sum vermis, et non homo; opprobrium hominum, et abjectio plebis.
7
But I, poor worm, have no manhood left; I am a by-word to all, the laughing-stock of the rabble.
8
All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head.
8
Omnes videntes me deriserunt me; locuti sunt labiis, et moverunt caput.
8
All those who catch sight of me fall to mocking; mouthing out insults, while they toss their heads in scorn,
9
He hoped in the Lord, let him deliver him: let him save him, seeing he delighteth in him.
9
Speravit in Domino, eripiat eum: salvum faciat eum, quoniam vult eum.
9
He committed himself to the Lord, why does not the Lord come to his rescue, and set his favourite free?
10
For thou art he that hast drawn me out of the womb: my hope from the breasts of my mother.
10
Quoniam tu es qui extraxisti me de ventre, spes mea ab uberibus matris meæ.
10
What hand but thine drew me out from my mother’s womb? Who else was my refuge when I hung at the breast?
11
I was cast upon thee from the womb. From my mother’s womb thou art my God,
11
In te projectus sum ex utero; de ventre matris meæ Deus meus es tu:
11
From the hour of my birth, thou art my guardian; since I left my mother’s womb, thou art my God!
12
depart not from me. For tribulation is very near: for there is none to help me.
12
ne discesseris a me, quoniam tribulatio proxima est, quoniam non est qui adjuvet.
12
Do not leave me now, when trouble is close at hand; stand near, when I have none to help me.
13
Many calves have surrounded me: fat bulls have besieged me.
13
Circumdederunt me vituli multi; tauri pingues obsederunt me.
13
My enemies ring me round, packed close as a herd of oxen, strong as bulls from Basan;
14
They have opened their mouths against me, as a lion ravening and roaring.
14
Aperuerunt super me os suum, sicut leo rapiens et rugiens.
14
so might a lion threaten me with its jaws, roaring for its prey.
15
I am poured out like water; and all my bones are scattered. My heart is become like wax melting in the midst of my bowels.
15
Sicut aqua effusus sum, et dispersa sunt omnia ossa mea: factum est cor meum tamquam cera liquescens in medio ventris mei.
15
I am spent as spilt water, all my bones out of joint, my heart turned to molten wax within me;
16
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: and thou hast brought me down into the dust of death.
16
Aruit tamquam testa virtus mea, et lingua mea adhæsit faucibus meis: et in pulverem mortis deduxisti me.
16
parched is my throat, like clay in the baking, and my tongue sticks fast in my mouth; thou hast laid me in the dust, to die.
17
For many dogs have encompassed me: the council of the malignant hath besieged me. They have dug my hands and feet.
17
Quoniam circumdederunt me canes multi; concilium malignantium obsedit me. Foderunt manus meas et pedes meos;
17
Prowling about me like a pack of dogs, their wicked conspiracy hedges me in; they have torn holes in my hands and feet;
18
They have numbered all my bones. And they have looked and stared upon me.
18
dinumeraverunt omnia ossa mea. Ipsi vero consideraverunt et inspexerunt me.
18
I can count my bones one by one; and they stand there watching me, gazing at me in triumph.
19
They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.
19
Diviserunt sibi vestimenta mea, et super vestem meam miserunt sortem.
19
They divide my spoils among them, cast lots for my garments.
20
But thou, O Lord, remove not thy help to a distance from me; look towards my defence.
20
Tu autem, Domine, ne elongaveris auxilium tuum a me; ad defensionem meam conspice.
20
Then, Lord, do not stand at a distance; if thou wouldst aid me, come speedily to my side.
21
Deliver, O God, my soul from the sword: my only one from the hand of the dog.
21
Erue a framea, Deus, animam meam, et de manu canis unicam meam.
21
Only life is left me; save that from the sword, from the power of these dogs;
22
Save me from the lion’s mouth; and my lowness from the horns of the unicorns.
22
Salva me ex ore leonis, et a cornibus unicornium humilitatem meam.
22
rescue me from the very mouth of the lion, the very horns of the wild oxen that have brought me thus low.
23
I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of the church will I praise thee.
23
Narrabo nomen tuum fratribus meis; in medio ecclesiæ laudabo te.
23
Then I will proclaim thy renown to my brethren; where thy people gather, I will join in singing thy praise,
24
Ye that fear the Lord, praise him: all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him.
24
Qui timetis Dominum, laudate eum; universum semen Jacob, glorificate eum.
24
Praise the Lord, all you that are his worshippers; honour to him from the sons of Jacob, reverence to him from Israel’s race!
25
Let all the seed of Israel fear him: because he hath not slighted nor despised the supplication of the poor man. Neither hath he turned away his face from me: and when I cried to him he heard me.
25
Timeat eum omne semen Israël, quoniam non sprevit, neque despexit deprecationem pauperis, nec avertit faciem suam a me: et cum clamarem ad eum, exaudivit me.
25
He has not scorned or slighted the appeal of the friendless, nor turned his face away from me; my cry for help did not go unheeded.
26
With thee is my praise in a great church: I will pay my vows in the sight of them that fear him.
26
Apud te laus mea in ecclesia magna; vota mea reddam in conspectu timentium eum.
26
Take what I owe thee, my song of praise before a great assembly. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the sight of his worshippers;
27
The poor shall eat and shall be filled: and they shall praise the Lord that seek him: their hearts shall live for ever and ever.
27
Edent pauperes, et saturabuntur, et laudabunt Dominum qui requirunt eum: vivent corda eorum in sæculum sæculi.
27
the poor shall eat now, and have their fill, those who look for the Lord will cry out in praise of him, Refreshed be your hearts eternally!
28
All the ends of the earth shall remember, and shall be converted to the Lord: And all the kindreds of the Gentiles shall adore in his sight.
28
Reminiscentur et convertentur ad Dominum universi fines terræ; et adorabunt in conspectu ejus universæ familiæ gentium:
28
The furthest dwellers on earth will bethink themselves of the Lord, and come back to him; all the races of the heathen will worship before him;
29
For the kingdom is the Lord’s; and he shall have dominion over the nations.
29
quoniam Domini est regnum, et ipse dominabitur gentium.
29
to the Lord royalty belongs, the whole world’s homage is his due.
30
All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and have adored: all they that go down to the earth shall fall before him.
30
Manducaverunt et adoraverunt omnes pingues terræ; in conspectu ejus cadent omnes qui descendunt in terram.
30
Him shall they worship, him only, that are laid to rest in the earth, even from their dust they shall adore.
31
And to him my soul shall live: and my seed shall serve him.
31
Et anima mea illi vivet; et semen meum serviet ipsi.
31
I, too, shall live on in his presence, and beget children to serve him; these to a later age shall speak of the Lord’s name;
32
There shall be declared to the Lord a generation to come: and the heavens shall shew forth his justice to a people that shall be born, which the Lord hath made.
32
Annuntiabitur Domino generatio ventura; et annuntiabunt cæli justitiam ejus populo qui nascetur, quem fecit Dominus.
32
these to a race that must yet be born shall tell the story of his faithfulness, Hear what the Lord did.
