Psalm 32

Knox Bible><Vulgate><Douay-Rheims
1
Triumph, just souls, in the Lord; true hearts, it is yours to praise him.
1
Psalmus David.
Exsultate, justi, in Domino; rectos decet collaudatio.
1
A psalm for David.
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just: praise becometh the upright.
2
Give thanks to the Lord with the viol’s music, praise him with a harp of ten strings.
2
Confitemini Domino in cithara; in psalterio decem chordarum psallite illi.
2
Give praise to the Lord on the harp; sing to him with the psaltery, the instrument of ten strings.
3
For him let a new song be sung; give him of your best, sound the harp and cry out lustily.
3
Cantate ei canticum novum; bene psallite ei in vociferatione.
3
Sing to him a new canticle, sing well unto him with a loud noise.
4
The Lord’s word is true, he is faithful in all his dealings;
4
Quia rectum est verbum Domini, et omnia opera ejus in fide.
4
For the word of the Lord is right, and all his works are done with faithfulness.
5
faithfulness he loves, and the just award, the whole earth overflows with the Lord’s goodness.
5
5
He loveth mercy and judgment; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
6
It was the Lord’s word that made the heavens, the breath of his lips that peopled them;
6
6
By the word of the Lord the heavens were established; and all the power of them by the spirit of his mouth:
7
he it is who stores up the waters of the sea as in a cistern, treasures up all its waves.
7
Congregans sicut in utre aquas maris; ponens in thesauris abyssos.
7
Gathering together the waters of the sea, as in a vessel; laying up the depths in storehouses.
8
Let the whole earth hold the Lord in dread, let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him;
8
8
Let all the earth fear the Lord, and let all the inhabitants of the world be in awe of him.
9
he spoke, and they were made, he gave his command, and their frame was fashioned.
9
9
For he spoke and they were made: he commanded and they were created.
10
At the Lord’s bidding, a nation’s purposes come to nothing, a people’s designs are thwarted;
10
10
The Lord bringeth to nought the counsels of nations; and he rejecteth the devices of people, and casteth away the counsels of princes.
11
his own designs stand firm for ever; generation after generation, his will does not swerve.
11
11
But the counsel of the Lord standeth for ever: the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12
Blessed the nation that calls the Lord its own God, the people he has chosen out to be his!
12
Beata gens cujus est Dominus Deus ejus; populus quem elegit in hæreditatem sibi.
12
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance.
13
Looking down from heaven, he watches all mankind,
13
De cælo respexit Dominus; vidit omnes filios hominum.
13
The Lord hath looked from heaven: he hath beheld all the sons of men.
14
his dwelling-place has the whole world in view;
14
14
From his habitation which he hath prepared, he hath looked upon all that dwell on the earth.
15
he has fashioned each man’s nature, and weighs the actions of each.
15
qui finxit sigillatim corda eorum; qui intelligit omnia opera eorum.
15
He who hath made the hearts of every one of them: who understandeth all their works.
16
There is no protection for kings in powerful armies, for warriors in abundant prowess;
16
16
The king is not saved by a great army: nor shall the giant be saved by his own great strength.
17
nor shall horses bring thee the mastery, brute strength that cannot save.
17
17
Vain is the horse for safety: neither shall he be saved by the abundance of his strength.
18
It is the Lord, watching over those who fear him and trust in his mercy,
18
Ecce oculi Domini super metuentes eum, et in eis qui sperant super misericordia ejus:
18
Behold the eyes of the Lord are on them that fear him: and on them that hope in his mercy.
19
that will protect their lives, will feed them in time of famine.
19
ut eruat a morte animas eorum, et alat eos in fame.
19
To deliver their souls from death; and feed them in famine.
20
Patiently we wait for the Lord’s help; he is our strength and our shield;
20
20
Our soul waiteth for the Lord: for he is our helper and protector.
21
in him our hearts will find contentment, in his holy name we trust.
21
Quia in eo lætabitur cor nostrum, et in nomine sancto ejus speravimus.
21
For in him our heart shall rejoice: and in his holy name we have trusted.
22
Lord, let thy mercy rest upon us, who put all our confidence in thee.
22
Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos, quemadmodum speravimus in te.
22
Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have hoped in thee.
