Douay-Rheims><Vulgate><Knox Bible
1
A psalm of a canticle, for the sons of Core, on the second day of the week.
1
Psalmus cantici. Filiis Core, secunda sabbati.
1
(A song. A psalm. Of the sons of Core.)
2
Great is the Lord, and exceedingly to be praised in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
2
Magnus Dominus et laudabilis nimis, in civitate Dei nostri, in monte sancto ejus.
2
The Lord is great, great honour is his due, here in the city where he, our God, dwells. Fair rises the peak of his holy mountain,
3
With the joy of the whole earth is mount Sion founded, on the sides of the north, the city of the great king.
3
Fundatur exsultatione universæ terræ mons Sion; latera aquilonis, civitas regis magni.
3
the pride of the whole world, and the true pole of earth, mount Sion, the city of the great King;
4
In her houses shall God be known, when he shall protect her.
4
Deus in domibus ejus cognoscetur cum suscipiet eam.
4
within those walls, God has proved himself a sure defence.
5
For behold the kings of the earth assembled themselves: they gathered together.
5
Quoniam ecce reges terræ congregati sunt; convenerunt in unum.
5
See, how the kings of the earth have made common cause, and met there in arms!
6
So they saw, and they wondered, they were troubled, they were moved:
6
Ipsi videntes, sic admirati sunt, conturbati sunt, commoti sunt.
6
At the sight of her all was bewilderment, and confusion, and dismay;
7
trembling took hold of them. There were pains as of a woman in labour.
7
Tremor apprehendit eos; ibi dolores ut parturientis:
7
fear took hold of them, sudden as the throes of a woman in travail;
8
With a vehement wind thou shalt break in pieces the ships of Tharsis.
8
in spiritu vehementi conteres naves Tharsis.
8
not more ruinously on ocean-going ships falls the east wind.
9
As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God hath founded it for ever.
9
Sicut audivimus, sic vidimus, in civitate Domini virtutum, in civitate Dei nostri: Deus fundavit eam in æternum.
9
Here, in this city of the Lord of hosts, the city of our own God, we have proved the tale long since told us, that God upholds her for all eternity;
10
We have received thy mercy, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
10
Suscepimus, Deus, misericordiam tuam in medio templi tui.
10
sheltered in thy temple, we give thanks for our deliverance.
11
According to thy name, O God, so also is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of justice.
11
Secundum nomen tuum, Deus, sic et laus tua in fines terræ; justitia plena est dextera tua.
11
O God, wherever thy name is known on earth, thy praise is told, ever just in thy dealings;
12
Let mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Juda be glad; because of thy judgments, O Lord.
12
Lætetur mons Sion, et exsultent filiæ Judæ, propter judicia tua, Domine.
12
well may the hill of Sion rejoice, well may the townships of Juda triumph, at the decrees which thou, Lord, hast executed.
13
Surround Sion, and encompass her: tell ye in her towers.
13
Circumdate Sion, et complectimini eam; narrate in turribus ejus.
13
Walk about Sion, make the round of her towers, and count the number of them;
14
Set your hearts on her strength; and distribute her houses, that ye may relate it in another generation.
14
Ponite corda vestra in virtute ejus, et distribuite domos ejus, ut enarretis in progenie altera.
14
mark well the defences that are hers, pass all her strongholds in review; then give word to the next generation,
15
For this is God, our God unto eternity, and for ever and ever: he shall rule us for evermore.
15
Quoniam hic est Deus, Deus noster in æternum, et in sæculum sæculi: ipse reget nos in sæcula.
15
Such is the God, who is our God for ever and ever; our Shepherd eternally.
